Folk literature and art should take root deeper into life
2024-07-24
Everyone is familiar with me, knowing that I am a folk art worker and a storytelling actor. Quyi belongs to folk art, and I am also a folk art worker. As for the storytelling I am engaged in, Quyi was a concept that only emerged after the founding of the People's Republic of China. Before that, those who performed storytelling, cross-talk, drumming, and danci were all referred to as folk artists. From my personal growth experience, before joining the Quyi troupe, I spent a long time listening to books in folk bookstores and tea houses. It was also there that I heard Professor Yang Chengtian's "Jingzhong Shuo Yue". He said it very well, and I had to come every day, which laid the foundation for me to write the storytelling "Yue Fei Zhuan". The concept of 'folk' has different voices in the academic community. I am not a theorist, but based on my personal experience, I believe that the so-called 'folk' is a posture that is close to the people and a sentiment rooted in life. So I am glad to see that the China Association for Democracy and People's Livelihood often goes to rural areas and ethnic minority areas, so as to deliver the policies and care of our party and country to all corners of the world, and let people of all ethnic groups in the country feel the warmth and power of literature and art. As a inheritor of intangible cultural heritage, I would like to share my understanding of folk literature and art from the perspective of inheritance. In summary, it can be summarized in two sentences - to root deeper in life and explore higher in art. Folk literature and art are the art of life, and only with the people at the center and life as the direction, can it be considered "authentic" folk literature and art. Let me give you an example, which is the Majie Book Society in Baofeng County, Henan Province. The Majie Book Fair is a grand event of folk art and folk customs. Since 1981, I have participated in the Ma Street Book Fair 21 times, which is my most frequent performance venue. Why do I persist? On the one hand, it is a holy land for musicians, and on the other hand, there is a strong folk atmosphere there. The Majie Book Fair is a typical place where art and life are combined. Compared to traditional Chinese opera troupes, storytelling in Quyi is more cost-effective and easily favored by the public. In addition, Majie was a water and land dock in history, and folk organizations spontaneously organized by storytellers often held activities here. Artists bring storytelling skills and spiritual enjoyment to the people of Majie, while the enthusiastic and generous Majie people manage their food and shelter. Over time, Majie has become the "headquarters" and "distribution center" for storytellers in this region. Watching a thousand plays in one day is better than reading ten thousand books in three days At the main meeting of the Majie Book Fair, I personally experienced this spectacle. According to statistics, the attending artists involved the vast majority of provinces and over 100 counties in China. At every book fair, there are over 1000 traditional and modern books performed on a single day at the venue. Artists rush to publish books, people listen to books and write books, and hold gatherings at fixed times and locations every year - this is the unique vitality of folk literature and art. I think the most touching thing about the Ma Street Book Fair is that it brings artists and the public together, tightly integrating art and life. Once detached from life, art becomes a water without a source and a tree without roots. Speaking of the second sentence 'Exploring higher heights in art', I also give an example of my own, which is the storytelling of 'The Legend of Yue Fei'. Many people may have heard of the book I mentioned, but they do not understand the arduous exploration I went through in the creative process. At that time, in order to keep up with the aesthetic of the times, I made some bold attempts, which were met with confusion from some veteran artists and peers. In the past, storytelling emphasized stability and coordination in four or six rows. It can be said that this storytelling style is a product of the times. Sitting in the tea house, sipping tea and listening to books, is incredibly relaxing. But times have changed. We created 'The Legend of Yue Fei' in 1979, the second year of reform and opening up. All industries are working hard to build the 'Four Modernizations', and it can be said that time is life. In the past, there was a saying about "Hammer Shaking the Golden Zen Child" in "Shuo Yue Quan Zhuan". When the hammer was lifted up, it began to unfold and speak. When the hammer fell, a month passed. Speaking for two hours every day can last for four months. Speaking on the radio, if calculated at half an hour per day, one can speak for over a year. The audience cannot tolerate it. This kind of storytelling not only fails to meet the needs of the general public for culture and art, but also will be eliminated by the times. It is under the ideology of "keeping up with the times" that "The Legend of Yue Fei" was created and performed. At that time, "The Legend of Yue Fei" spread throughout the country through radio and was loved by the masses, which was inseparable from the re creation that adapted to the needs of the times. Today, although I am over 80 years old, I still read the news, newspapers, Tiktok and online novels every day. I have opened a channel called 'Liu Lanfang People's Bookstore' in Himalaya, with over 2.3 million fans and billions of views on my works. In 2021, my newly adapted book "New Douluo Continent" based on the classic time travel novel has also received high praise from netizens. From face-to-face communication to online communication, this is another constantly changing innovation. (New Society)
