2024-07-23
On the 23rd, the Sichuan Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology announced new archaeological achievements at the Sanxingdui site: more than 3000 years ago, the ancient city of Sanxingdui had clear urban planning; First discovery of handicraft workshops. The Sanxingdui Site is located in Guanghan, Sichuan, with an area of approximately 12 square kilometers. The core area is an ancient city surrounded by tall city walls. Archaeologists have reconstructed the basic layout of the Sanxingdui ancient city site based on exploration of the existing city walls: the site covers an area of approximately 3.6 square kilometers and runs northwest southeast. The orientation is basically consistent with the previously discovered Qingguan Mountain Palace, as well as the high-grade building foundation and jade workshop newly discovered at the Sanxingdui site from 2022 to 2024. The placement orientation of cultural relics in the pit is also basically consistent with the orientation of the entire Sanxingdui Ancient City. Through the continuous efforts of archaeologists, the layout of Sanxingdui Ancient City is now basically clear: the city is north of the Duck River, a tributary of the Tuojiang River, and the winding Mamu River passes through the city. There are palace areas and handicraft workshop areas to the north. Xu Danyang, Deputy Director of the Sanxingdui Site Workstation at Sichuan Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology, introduced that the main axis direction of Sanxingdui Ancient City is northwest southeast, which is also the result of the ancient Shu people adapting to the local geographical environment and referring to the natural mountain and river trends at that time. On the one hand, this layout facilitates the production and daily use of water, and on the other hand, it facilitates the use of waterways to connect with the outside world, reflecting advanced urban construction ideas. "Sanxingdui Site Plan. According to the Sichuan Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology, from 2022 to 2024, archaeologists discovered new remains related to the production and processing of jade and stone artifacts at the Sanxingdui site. According to experts' preliminary judgment, it is a "production workshop" for jade and stone artifacts, dating back to the mid Shang Dynasty, about 3500 to 3400 years ago, earlier than the burial age of the Sanxingdui sacrificial pit. This is the first discovery of a handicraft workshop at the Sanxingdui site. Near the Yanjia Courtyard in Moon Bay, Sanxingdui, Sichuan Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology conducted archaeological exploration and successively found more than 400 high-level building foundations, ash pits, ash ditches, stone tool production and processing relics, and unearthed more than 4000 pieces of pottery, jade, stone tools, etc. Newly unearthed cultural relics, including raw materials, blanks, waste materials, fragments, and finished products of jade and stone, form a relatively complete chain of early handicraft industry. The discovery of the 'production workshop' will uncover mysteries such as where the large amount of jade and stone materials unearthed from Sanxingdui came from, how the production technology is, the production process and circulation methods Ran Honglin, the director of the Sanxingdui Site Workstation at Sichuan Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology, said.
