New Chinese record species of moths discovered in Jiangxi
2024-07-22
Recently, researchers from the Jinggangshan National Nature Reserve Management Bureau, Northeast Forestry University, and other institutions in Jiangxi Province conducted a study on moth specimens collected during the field moth resource survey in Jinggangshan National Nature Reserve from 2021 to 2023. Through species comparison and identification, the researchers discovered a newly recorded species in the family Nymphalidae in China - the Pearl Small Moth. The head, chest, and abdomen of the adult pearl prickly moth are dark brown to gray brown in color. There is a silver midline parallel to the outer edge of the wings in the middle of the forewings, dividing the wing surface into two parts: the inner part is reddish brown and the outer part is dark brown. The base color of the hind wings is gray brown, and the leading edge area is light yellow. In addition, this field survey of moth resources also discovered four newly recorded species in Jiangxi, namely the Black Striped Spiny Moth, the Four Faced Mountain Striped Spiny Moth, the Wide Jawed Eyebrow Spiny Moth, and the Crimson Eyebrow Spiny Moth, among which the Wide Jawed Eyebrow Spiny Moth is a new combination species. It is reported that research in Jiangxi Province mainly focuses on bird and animal monitoring, and there is a relative lack of research on insects. The discovery of these 5 newly recorded species of moths further enriches the background data of biodiversity in Jinggangshan Nature Reserve, and helps to comprehensively understand the current status of insect resources in Jinggangshan and protect its biodiversity.
