Boeing launches C-17 hypersonic missile launch system
2024-07-19
Recently, Boeing released a military transport aircraft hypersonic missile launch system that enables the C-17 Globemaster III military transport aircraft to launch multiple hypersonic missiles. The system is called a "revolver" and uses an electromagnetic launch mechanism to quickly launch up to 12 X-51A "Wave Rider" hypersonic cruise missiles. It has two sequentially installed rollers, which help ensure precise and rapid deployment of missiles in the air. At the end of June, Boeing shared an animation on social media showing how a launcher was launched from the rear of a C-17 transport plane. Once fully operational, the "revolver" can transform the C-17 into a hypersonic missile launch vehicle. The Boeing X-51A "Waverider" is an experimental hypersonic cruise missile that can reach a flight speed of Mach 5. This weapon weighs approximately 4000 pounds (1814 kilograms) and was originally designed to be launched from B-52 bombers. (New Society)
