The scale of the online literature market continues to expand
2024-07-18
After more than 20 years of continuous development, China's online literature is moving from niche to mass, becoming an important support for meeting the spiritual and cultural needs of the people and enhancing the digital reading service system. At the 7th China Internet Literature+Conference held recently, the China Audio Video and Digital Publishing Association released the "2023 China Internet Literature Development Report". The report shows that in recent years, the revenue scale of China's online literature market has maintained long-term stable and rapid growth, and the industry scale has achieved leapfrog expansion. The revenue scale of China's online literature market has increased from 12.92 billion yuan in 2017 to 38.3 billion yuan in 2023. Zhang Yijun, the first vice chairman of the China Audio Video and Digital Publishing Association, stated that according to the report, the content ecology of China's online literature industry is becoming increasingly perfect, the elements of the entire intellectual property (IP) industry chain are becoming more active, and the business model continues to innovate. It is reported that in the total revenue of 38.3 billion yuan in 2023, subscription revenue, copyright revenue, and advertising revenue are 14.316 billion yuan, 6.817 billion yuan, and 15.408 billion yuan, respectively. In 2023, advertising revenue will account for 40.2%, surpassing subscription revenue for the first time (accounting for 37.4%). Zhang Yijun stated that the growth of advertising revenue is playing an increasingly important role in driving industry development. Why can the scale of the online literature industry maintain a considerable growth rate? Continuously cultivating real-life themes and integrating diverse elements are empowering content innovation in the online literature industry. With the efforts of the platform and authors, the types of realistic works have become more mature, and the awareness of excellence continues to increase, presenting a new trend of integration with traditional literature. At the same time, content products that integrate elements are gradually becoming popular, especially cultural confidence and strong country narrative, which have become new trends in online literature creation. In addition, new communication technologies drive product innovation and further expand the user base. For example, utilizing generative artificial intelligence technology to innovate and develop derivative products for online literary works, endowing value-added services derived from content IP. The report shows that by the end of 2023, the cumulative number of online literature users in China has reached 550 million, a year-on-year increase of 10.44%. With the continuous increase in the scale and quantity of products such as audiobooks and short dramas, the market coverage ability continues to strengthen, and the user base of online literature has also found a new growth path. In recent years, iQiyi, Tencent, Youku, Mango, Tiktok, Kwai and other content platforms have successively launched support plans for micro skits, helping online literature and micro skits form a strong win-win trend at multiple levels. The adaptation of online literature into online micro dramas has natural advantages, "said Li Li, the general manager of iQiyi Drama Center." The audience of micro dramas highly overlaps with the online literature market, and the online student market complements young teams, moving towards innovation, excellence, and diversity. In the view of Li Jiang, the CEO of Dianzhong Technology, there are still problems with the excessive number of dramas, unstable content quality, and similar themes in micro dramas. The industry urgently needs to upgrade towards high-quality and mainstream content, and achieve high-quality innovative development of the new format of "online literature+". Huo Zhijing, Deputy Minister of the Propaganda Department of the Beijing Municipal Party Committee and Director of the Beijing Film Bureau, stated that online literature and online short dramas should empower each other and work together to pursue excellence. As a new form of literature and art in the Internet era, online literature and online short plays, like traditional literature and art works, carry the important mission of reflecting the style of the times, leading the trend of the times, enlightening thoughts, and warming the soul. Literature is the source, with abundant IP resources. We need to open up the transformation path from online literature to online micro dramas, fully leverage the role of literature as a content engine, and achieve high-quality development of online literature and art through transformation and innovation. Wang Zhi, member of the Party Group and Deputy Director of Beijing Radio and Television Bureau, stated that in recent years, the industrial chain for the creation, dissemination, and development of literary and artistic works has gradually improved, and the proportion of online literary works being transformed into micro dramas has been continuously increasing. The "two-way rush" between online literature and online micro dramas should adhere to the correct value orientation and highlight the guidance of ideological values; To focus on high-quality creation and promote the upgrading of the industry; We need to strengthen two-way integration and transformation, and empower industrial innovation and development. Industry practitioners should seize the opportunities of the times, break through the limitations of a single development model, share resources, achieve mutual benefit and win-win results, and jointly realize high-quality and sustainable development of the entire industry chain. The prospects of online literature are promising, but it still faces many problems and challenges. Industry insiders admit that currently, the shortcomings and deficiencies in the quality of online literature related content products, data asset standards, copyright protection systems, and long-term regulatory mechanisms are all "growing pains" facing China's online literature industry. Therefore, the industry should pay more attention to the construction of the entire industry chain system of core IP. Zhang Yijun stated that innovative models, technological empowerment, IP integration, and international development will provide a continuous stream of new impetus for the growth and development of online literature in China. Next, by continuously improving the ability to produce high-quality online literature content, accelerating the establishment of a sound IP industry chain development mechanism, and steadily promoting the construction of an overseas communication ecosystem, we will better support the high-quality development of the industry.
