510.2 meters! Namtso scientific expedition sets record for deepest lake drilling in China

On July 17th, it was learned from the site of the Namtso scientific expedition that the drilling depth has reached 510.2 meters, setting a record for the deepest lake drilling in China. This has important significance for promoting the research on lake drilling and ancient climate in China. The joint scientific research team is composed of the Lake and Environmental Change Research Team of the Qinghai Tibet Plateau Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and scientists and drilling technicians from Germany, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, the United States and other countries. It is the highest altitude drilling project in the International Continental Scientific Drilling Program (ICDP) so far. Namtso is located in the hinterland of the Qinghai Tibet Plateau and is one of the largest lakes in China in terms of water capacity. It is also the highest lake in the world with an area of over 1000 square kilometers. Namtso is a closed lake where water does not flow out of the basin. It is the lowest point of the entire basin and is therefore a gathering place for information on rocks, soil, vegetation, rivers, and human activities within the basin. It has important scientific research significance. The drilling platform and the main drilling technicians are all from China, and the collected lake rock cores will be permanently preserved in China. (New Society)
