The reporter learned from Shanghai Ocean University that researchers at the university have recently discovered three new species of fish unique to China: the green spotted climbing loach, the pearl finned climbing loach, and the Hanlin fine toothed loach. The relevant research papers have been published in international academic journals such as Animal Systematics and Evolution and Zoological Classification. According to Professor Tang Wenqiao from Shanghai Ocean University, the Green Spotted Climbing Loach is a peculiar looking fish that lives in mountain streams from central Guangxi to western Yunnan. Its body is dark green with black stripes resembling zebras, which can stick to rocks like disks. Locals vividly call it the "Green Zebra". After field investigation, the research team collected specimens, took photos, measured their morphology, and extracted DNA. After sequencing, it was found that the genetic distance between the "Green Zebra" and the closest known species reached 5.20%, far exceeding the genetic differentiation level between most known species in the same group. It is a new species, and the team named this species "Green Spotted Climbing Loach". In the investigation of the distribution range and population survival status of the "Green Spotted Climbing Loach", researchers also discovered a group of fish similar in morphology to the "Bingshi Climbing Loach" in the border area between Yunnan and Guangxi. Their pectoral fins have a string of "pearl like" particles, while populations in other areas do not have this feature. Through DNA sequencing of the samples, the research team was pleasantly surprised to find that this species has a minimum genetic distance of 11.15% from the "Bingshi Climbing Loach", indicating a very high degree of genetic differentiation that is close to the level of genus differentiation. It can be confirmed as another new species, and the team named it the "Pearl finned Climbing Loach". In addition, Professor Li Chenhong's team from Shanghai Ocean University recently reported on a new species unique to China, the Hanlin fine toothed catfish, in the internationally renowned zoological journal "Zoological Classification". This is the second new species of the genus Tetraodontis discovered by the team, following the "blunt snouted slender toothed Tetraodontis". It is distributed in Guangxi and named in honor of Professor Wu Hanlin, a famous Chinese ichthyologist and professor at Shanghai Ocean University. (New Society)
