I am repairing ancient books in the library ": the youthful choice of" Generation Z "ancient book restorers
2024-07-16
Ancient books are the material carriers of China's excellent traditional culture, embodying the wisdom and civilization of our ancestors. Through the restoration and protection of ancient books, it is a way to inherit traditional culture. In the scorching summer, outside, in an ancient book restoration room in the Jiangxi Provincial Library, Weng Yanyu, an ancient book restorer in the library's historical literature department, is calmly repairing an ancient book with a history of over a hundred years. Only the ancestors of Yin had books and scriptures. The vast collection of books not only records history, but also carries countless cultural heritages. But with the increase of years and changes in the external environment, these precious ancient books will be damaged to varying degrees. For this reason, generation after generation of people have joined the work of protecting ancient books. As a member of Generation Z, Weng Yanyu has been very interested in traditional culture since childhood. During her graduate studies, she chose the seemingly obscure major of "Ancient Book Protection and Restoration" and after graduation, she entered the Jiangxi Provincial Library as an ancient book restorer. The Jiangxi Provincial Library is a key protected unit for ancient books in China and also the center for the protection of ancient books in Jiangxi Province. It has a collection of nearly 380000 ancient books. The ancient books filled with sweat are not only guarded by "masters" who have been working for more than 20 years, but also by youthful forces like Weng Yanyu, bringing the ancient books back to their "youth". Ancient books often suffer from aging, acidification, insect damage, and other damages. The humid weather in the south can also easily cause mold and adhesion in ancient books Weng Yanyu said that the problem she often deals with now is insect infestation, and she needs to open each ancient book one by one and repair the damaged parts one by one. In the ancient book restoration room of Jiangxi Provincial Library, Weng Yanyu is carefully picking up a Qing engraved copy of "Kangxi Dictionary". After experiencing the vicissitudes of time, the paper of this ancient book has turned yellow, and each sheet is covered with dense wormholes. Weng Yanyu selected the matching paper and mixed it with the prepared paste, patiently repairing each hole. Before repairing, we will use microscopes and other instruments to observe the characteristics of the paper. The paper thickness, color, raw materials, and even texture of each ancient book are different Weng Yanyu said that there are more than 200 types of paper for repair, and different pastes need to be prepared according to the characteristics of the paper. Sometimes, the paper needs to be crushed with a blender to produce pulp for repair. When repairing, we adhere to the principle of 'repairing the old as it is', adopt minimal intervention methods, and do not modify or supplement the content of ancient books In Weng Yanyu's view, the greatest purpose of restoring ancient books is to protect them, allowing them to be preserved for a longer period of time through restoration. The restoration of ancient books is very complex, involving more than 20 processes such as paper matching, disassembling book leaves, repairing book leaves, aligning columns, and hammering flat. The restoration time needs to be calculated in years and requires full patience and attention to detail. But in Weng Yanyu's opinion, she enjoys this job very much. Weng Yanyu said that at the moment she came into contact with ancient books, she seemed to have a century long intersection with the author, and many ancient books still had annotations from readers of different eras. In addition, some ancient books still have traces of restoration by predecessors, and the civilization ideas and protection of ancient books by predecessors are concretized in an instant. The ancient books restored by masters such as Weng Yanyu not only extend their lifespan, but also ultimately present their content to readers. The Jiangxi Provincial Library will scan and digitize these restored ancient books one by one. Readers can read their electronic versions online or borrow the original books or photocopies of ancient books from the Jiangxi Provincial Library. The restoration of ancient books is a long process, and learning restoration is also endless. In the future, I hope to seize opportunities for communication, communicate more with seniors and peers, learn skills, and protect more ancient books Weng Yanyu expressed her hope that in the future, more and more ancient books will be reborn in her hands.
