Is it Jie Si? Jie Si Crosstalk Society

2024-07-15

The Xi'an University Crosstalk Alliance Tour at Xi'an University of Electronic Science and Technology Station saw Cheng Jie and his partner Yu Tianwei perform the cross-talk "Yellow Crane Tower" at the small theater of the university's student activity center. As a cross-talk enthusiast trained by Xi'an University of Electronic Science and Technology, I would like to express my blessings to my alma mater, teachers, and classmates through a fast-paced dialogue On June 21st, at the graduation ceremony of the 2024 cohort of students at Xi'an University of Electronic Science and Technology, the representative of graduates from the Electronic Science and Technology major at the School of Electronic Engineering, Cheng Jie, concluded his speech with a fast-paced conclusion. For him, this is a successful conclusion to his seven-year college life. Cheng Jie is an authentic science and engineering student, as well as a traditional Quyi culture enthusiast. As soon as he enrolled in his freshman year, he joined the school's Jiesi Cross Talk Society and stayed there for 7 years. In the past 7 years, Cheng Jie has performed 73 times on stage, with 2 original scripts and 45 adapted scripts. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the establishment of Jiesi Cross Talk Society. As the "elder" of the society, Cheng Jie and a group of young people who love traditional Quyi culture have taken root and sprouted Quyi culture in the campus soil of Xi'an Electronic Science and Technology University (hereinafter referred to as "Xidian") in their own way. Because of her passion, cross-talk entered the campus. Ten years ago, Tan Huiwen, a Tianjin girl majoring in automation from the School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, and three friends hit it off and established the school's first cross-talk club - Jiesi Crosstalk Club. At first, there were only four members in the club, but after 10 years of polishing, it has gradually taken shape and cultivated a world of young people's cross-talk like a snowball. There are over 50 people in the Jiesi Cross Talk Society who, like Cheng Jie, have had the experience of performing on stage, which was unexpected by Tan Huiwen 10 years ago. In Tianjin, cross-talk is a very popular way of entertainment, and there are even dedicated cross-talk radio stations. After coming to Xi'an to attend university, I realized that there were no cross-talk broadcasts in other cities. So I want to create a cross-talk club to bring cross-talk back into life In this way, the Tianjin girl who couldn't hear cross-talk had the idea of establishing a club. Establishing a club is not difficult, but "how to keep the club alive" is the challenge faced by Tan Huiwen. Tan Huiwen described the state at that time as "poor and white". In the first year of the club's establishment, only the first three people were able to perform on stage - Zhang Lingfei, Li Bowen, and Zeng Fanyi. Polishing the script and performing on stage relied entirely on self-study. However, this situation did not last long, and in the second year of the club's establishment, suitable actors were not recruited. The absence of new actors lasted for a year, with three 'club elders' taking turns performing. The state of no new actors continued until the third year, and it was not until 2016 that the club recruited new members. However, perhaps due to the unique optimism of young cross-talk performers, facing the challenges of the "entrepreneurial" phase, members of the club are committed to upgrading and fighting monsters in different ways, encouraging each other. In order to facilitate the management of the club, everyone has decided to give each term a stage name, following the school motto of 'honesty, truth, perseverance, learning, and action'. We start from the 'thick' generation, and we don't know what to do after 8 characters. Let's see if the club can survive for 8 years, "said Tan Huiwen. At that time, Xi'an Qingqu Society was focusing on building the Shaanxi University Cross Talk Alliance, hoping to cultivate the next generation of cross talk performers and audiences, and lay a solid foundation for the development of cross talk. The members of Jiesi Cross Talk Society seized the opportunity and actively sought help from Qingqu Society. We contacted Xi'an Qingqu Society at that time, and the teachers not only provided teaching assistance, but also helped us with performances during school special events. In Tan Huiwen's opinion, such assistance was particularly important for the start-up stage of "Jiesi", as it was the professional performances of Qingqu Society that attracted the initial audience of the group. After experiencing the "turbulence" of the start-up period, with the perseverance of the first generation of club members, the club finally took root in the school. In order to ensure the stability of development, the club has stipulated to hold at least one special performance every year. "This is the most fundamental principle of the club and must be adhered to," said Tan Huiwen. It is precisely this persistence that has led more and more people on campus to become fans of the Jiesi Cross Talk Club, and the audience for each performance is gradually increasing. The club also successfully "survived" for 8 years, and the number of actors steadily increased from the initial 4 to over 50. All the students from different colleges have survived, "said Tan Huiwen. Tan Huiwen has been graduated for many years, and this year she returned to school to watch the club's special performance on the occasion of its 10th anniversary. As she sat in the audience, watching the younger members of the club take their bows on stage, her heart couldn't calm down. The actors on stage were able to fully fill the stage of the small theater, which we couldn't imagine at the time, "said Tan Huiwen. If Tan Huiwen witnessed the difficulties at the beginning of the establishment of the campus "green" voice integrated into traditional folk art, then Cheng Jie, who joined in the third year of the establishment of the club, is a witness to the growth of the club. Under their relay inheritance, the club that was originally born out of passion has now gained a deeper "mission". As a general term for traditional Chinese rap art, Quyi has a long history of at least a thousand years, and xiangsheng is just a small branch in the garden of Quyi. For members of the Jiesi Cross Talk Society, it is not easy to inherit and perform this art that originated in the Ming and Qing dynasties well, so that listeners can "smile knowingly". After so many years of development, traditional comedic techniques in cross-talk have actually been mastered by the old masters In Cheng Jie's opinion, as a "novice" who loves cross-talk, learning classic cross-talk is the best way to get started. In order to enable members of the club to better master the art of cross-talk, Jiesi Crosstalk Society regularly holds club activities and organizes all members to learn classic cross-talk clips together. We will do traditional classic cross-talk appreciation, such as watching the cross-talk works of masters Hou Baolin, Ma Sanli, Ma Zhiming, Guo Degang, etc., analyzing their language rhythm, techniques of shaking off burdens, and the profound meanings contained therein, "Cheng Jie introduced. In his opinion, 'storytelling, learning, and singing are all forms of expression on the stage', and cross-talk 'jokes about wisdom, not poverty'. Every new cross-talk is a face-to-face and in-depth communication with the audience. After accumulating some performance experience, Cheng Jie and his team members began to study scripts. In addition to "entertaining", they hoped to use their own creative performances to let more peers understand the unique charm of traditional Chinese culture. During his 7 years in the club, Cheng Jie created and adapted a total of 47 scripts. Among them, the content adapted from the classic cross-talk "The Great Bodyguard" created by Ma Zhiming and Huang Zumin has gained recognition from multiple parties. The story prototype tells the story of a pair of brothers who make a living by practicing martial arts. Due to their lack of proficiency in martial arts, they make jokes while working as bodyguards. After being adapted by Cheng Jie, the "Campus Version Bodyguard" has been launched, with the protagonist transforming into the familiar "milk tea guy" in the daily lives of classmates. There is a fixed performance evaluation every year, and daily check-in through the app is required. If the number of check ins throughout the year is less than a certain percentage, the assessment qualification will be revoked. The reason for this adjustment is that students' lives will also encounter similar situations, and this design can resonate more with everyone, "said Cheng Jie. Similar changes are not uncommon in the adapted scripts of Jiesi Cross Talk Society, who are skilled at using life oriented expressions and incorporating trivial matters from their classmates' daily lives in a humorous manner. The adapted version of "The Great Bodyguard" not only received high praise in offline performances at school, but also received recognition from many professionals after being uploaded to video websites. After a blogger shared the performance video, nearly 60000 views excited them. Inheritance begins with passion. Looking back on his time in the cross-talk club, Cheng Jie sighed and said, "When I listen to cross-talk again in the future, I may think of a group of young people who loved traditional Chinese opera during my university years. One day, they said a cross-talk that made me feel so amused. Not only did it enrich my life, but it also allowed people around me to understand the art form of cross-talk and feel the charm of traditional Chinese opera culture through us." An important task of doing well in cross-talk performance is to observe life. Good scripts and stories all come from life. As a member of Generation Z, Cheng Jie understands that only by actively innovating and embracing the current reality can cross-talk maintain its vitality forever. As the saying goes, 'A master of Chinese opera is a form of folk art that you can never tire of listening to.' With the increasing number of young people watching and performing cross-talk, the stories of cross-talk will continue to be performed both inside and outside the campus. (New Society)
