Equipping and utilizing AEDs to make sports activities more reassuring

2024-07-15

Currently, the national fitness craze is surging, and the general public is actively participating in sports activities. According to data from 2023, the proportion of people in China who regularly participate in physical exercise reaches 37.2%, and the public's awareness of fitness continues to improve, leading to a sustained improvement in the national health level. Due to individual differences in physical condition, acceptable levels of exercise intensity, and varying impacts of exercise environments on individuals, unexpected events may occur during the exercise process. Accidents are not scary, if the sports venue is equipped with proper first aid facilities, it may be able to turn danger into safety. In recent years, with the continuous improvement of social governance efficiency and urban economic development level, automatic external defibrillators (AEDs) have become increasingly common in various public places. According to data from the Hangzhou Emergency Center, as of July 2024, the number of AEDs deployed in public places in the city has reached 8576, mainly distributed in densely populated and emergency prone areas such as communities, subways, train stations, scenic spots, schools, and fitness centers. Since the launch of the "Public Defibrillation Program" in Shenzhen in 2017, over 43000 AEDs have been installed in public places, successfully treating over 100 patients with cardiac arrest. According to statistics, there are approximately 540000 cases of sudden cardiac death in China each year. Sudden cardiac death is the most common cause of exercise-induced sudden death. Based on past cases, in the event of sudden cardiac arrest or other critical situations during exercise, the use of AED for immediate cardiopulmonary resuscitation can greatly save the lives of those who experience sudden accidents. Therefore, in addition to increasing efforts to popularize knowledge about health and scientific sports, equipping sports venues with sufficient first aid equipment such as AEDs will better safeguard national fitness. The "Healthy China Action (2019-2030)" proposes to "improve the standards for emergency facilities and equipment in public places, equip schools, government agencies, enterprises and institutions, airports, stations, port passenger stations, large shopping malls, cinemas and other densely populated places with emergency drugs, equipment and facilities, and equip them with automatic external defibrillators." The work of increasing AED equipment and popularizing usage methods in public places needs to be vigorously and continuously promoted. At present, cities such as Shanghai, Hangzhou, Guangzhou, Chengdu, and Shenzhen have taken the lead in promoting the installation of AEDs in public sports venues. On January 1, 2024, the "Shanghai Sports Development Regulations" officially came into effect, requiring public sports venues to be equipped with automatic external defibrillators, and encouraging commercial sports facilities with conditions to be equipped with automatic external defibrillators; In 2021, all municipal sports venues in Chengdu have been equipped with external defibrillators; In 2022, the top ten public sports venues in Guangzhou will be equipped with 154 automatic external defibrillators. Of course, the price of AED devices is relatively expensive, which is a practical factor that cannot be ignored. How to promote the sufficient provision of AED equipment in sports venues nationwide and ensure that the operation and management personnel of sports venues have corresponding emergency skills is an urgent problem that we need to solve. In terms of improving equipment coverage, the exploration in Zibo, Shandong is not without inspiration. Local innovation explores the rental purchasing model to make equipment configuration and maintenance more efficient. Through various policy measures such as financial subsidies, we will promote the installation of AED equipment in commercial sports venues and strengthen the popularization and training of first aid knowledge, which will provide an additional guarantee for sports and fitness activities and give people more peace of mind.
