Ma Kaishuo: The pace of competition between China and the United States will accelerate in the next decade
2024-07-10
How will China US relations develop after the US presidential election at the end of this year? The UAE Strategic Research Center recently held a lecture inviting experts to discuss this matter. The speaker of this lecture is Ma Kaishuo, a senior scholar and former diplomat at the Asian Studies Institute of the National University of Singapore. According to the website of the UAE Strategic Research Center, Ma Kaishuo focused on how the upcoming US presidential election will affect the development of China US relations, as well as the ways in which all parties will respond to competition, related interests, and prospects between China and the US. When analyzing the relationship between China and the United States, Ma Kaishuo stated that the United States believes it has about ten years to prevent China from becoming a world leader. He emphasized that the United States will undoubtedly use this period to increase pressure on China. Ma Kaishuo predicted the future confrontation between these two global powers, as well as the ability of the United States to solve this problem from its own interests, and then emphasized that the United States cannot contain China. Ma Kaishuo pointed out that China learned from the lessons of the collapse of the Soviet Union and also summarized the experience of the United States strategically using neighboring countries to implement containment. In response, China focuses on strengthening domestic social construction, promoting economic development, and improving relations with neighboring countries. An example of this strategy is that China's trade with ASEAN countries is approaching $1 trillion, while China has made significant progress in the field of electric vehicles. When talking about China's advantages, Ma Kaishuo further pointed out that compared to the United States, which cannot accept its competitors, China has not targeted any major world powers, including the United States, with a competitive ideology. Regarding the potential impact of the US presidential election on US China relations, Ma Keshuo emphasized that there are many possibilities for the final outcome, which may not change, but may also undergo significant changes. He believes that if Biden wins, any possible changes will be subtle and limited. However, even so, Ma Kaishuo believes that regardless of who takes office in the White House, the pace of competition between the United States and China will accelerate in the next decade. As for how the differences in election results will affect Washington's handling of the US China confrontation, Ma Keshuo said that Biden's handling of the confrontation may be vastly different from Trump's. Even if he increases pressure on China, Biden will adopt a cautious attitude. On the contrary, Trump, known for his unpredictability, may take any approach, either by choosing to resolve complex issues in relations with China through major strategic agreements, or by imposing tariffs and sanctions. Regarding how other relevant countries that cannot be separated from the US China conflict should handle themselves, Ma Kaishuo believes that emerging countries should maintain neutrality and be willing to establish diversified political and economic relations with China and the United States in a balanced manner, while not intervening in the US China conflict.
