Read a book together and fall in love with a city! Guangdong Cuisine Chronicle launches the 2024 "Guangzhou Foshan City Reading Together" Reading Relay Competition

2024-07-09

On July 6th, the reading relay race was held simultaneously at the Guangzhou Library, Foshan Library, and various sub districts. As the ancient saying goes, "Food is the paramount necessity of the people." Guangzhou and Foshan are both habitats of Lingnan culture, sharing the same roots and lineage in food. The enthusiasm for food among the citizens of Guangzhou and Foshan is also high. The 6th "Guangfo City Reading Together" Reading Relay Competition in 2024, which has attracted the attention of Guangfo readers, jointly read "Cantonese Cuisine Chronicles" that tells the story of Lingnan cuisine culture. Compared to previous years, the book "Cantonese Cuisine Chronicles" was jointly read by four district museums in the Guangzhou competition this year, with a wider coverage. More than a hundred people signed up for the "relay", reaching a new high compared to previous years. Readers of different ages and professions share a taste of culinary culture and experience the charm of reading during the event, fully showcasing the theme of "reading a book together and falling in love with a city" this year. The reading relay competition is held simultaneously in Guangzhou and Foshan. Readers from the Guangzhou competition area read the first two chapters of the book, while readers from the Foshan competition area relay the last two chapters. This form of "relay" co reading is very fresh for many readers. This year's relay reading had a total of 6 libraries organizing readers to participate, with a wider coverage. At the newly added Baiyun Library competition area this year, contestants focused on reading "Cantonese Cuisine Chronicles", their gaze wandering between words and lines, and their pens quickly recording inspiration and key points in notebooks. This focus is not only reflected in their deep understanding of the content, but also in their love for Cantonese cuisine and profound understanding of Lingnan culture. Last year's co reading book "The Introduction of Cantonese Cuisine to the North" was also related to Lingnan cuisine. A reader who participated in the competition for two consecutive years stated that there were significant differences in writing style and article structure between the two works. The interpretation of Cantonese cuisine and the description of stories each had their own characteristics. This year, participating again gave me new feelings and experiences. The contestants focused on reading and carefully recorded the reading scenes of each competition area, gathering readers from different regions and ages. At the event venue of the Guangzhou Library, an elderly person with white hair caught everyone's attention. This grandmother Kang from Wuhan, who is over seventy years old, is a fan of Sheng Hui, the author of the book "Cantonese Cuisine Chronicles". She said, "It's my first time participating in this relay reading activity, and I find it very interesting and meaningful.". Ms. Kang, a reader who is over seventy years old and has participated in the reading relay competition, is also a student contestant. One of the high school student readers believes that the books we read together this time are about Cantonese cuisine topics that she has been familiar with since childhood, making her feel very familiar. After submitting the paper, many readers exchanged ideas with each other, and the scene was harmonious. Although everyone has different identities, professions, and ages, their love for reading and food is equally enthusiastic. After the competition, participants expressed that the reading relay competition not only deepened their understanding of Cantonese cuisine culture, but also stimulated their strong interest in reading. "This is my first time participating in such an activity, and I feel it is very meaningful. By reading 'Cantonese Cuisine Chronicle', I not only learned a lot about Cantonese cuisine, but also felt the profound cultural heritage of Guangdong and Foshan." said a reader in the Foshan Library competition area. The Guangzhou Library Sub district Foshan Library Sub district "Guangzhou Foshan Same City Reading Together" activity has been successfully held for six sessions, becoming an important platform for cultural exchange between Guangzhou and Foshan. This activity not only promotes the reading enthusiasm and cultural literacy of the citizens of Guangzhou and Foshan, but also deepens the cultural identity and emotional connection between the two places. In the future, the "Guangfo City Reading Together" activity will continue to uphold the purpose of inheriting, promoting, and revitalizing Lingnan culture, launching more excellent reading books and diverse reading activities, and contributing more strength to cultural exchange and development between Guangfo and other regions.
