Five Years of Successful Application for World Heritage in Liangzhu: Seeing More Faces of the Holy Land of Civilization
2024-07-08
On July 6, 2019, the Liangzhu Ancient City Site, which serves as evidence of China's 5000 year civilization history, was approved for inclusion in the World Cultural Heritage List. Over the past five years, the second half of Liangzhu's application for World Heritage has been being written. In Yuhang District, Hangzhou City, where the Liangzhu Ancient City Site is located, the local government has continuously polished the golden business card of "Five Thousand Years of China Looking at Liangzhu". While the protection and research of the Liangzhu Ancient City Site and Liangzhu culture have deepened, it has gradually evolved into a "new engine" for promoting mutual learning of civilizations and regional development. The ancient Liangzhu also showcases a younger and more diverse side of the civilized holy land in this process. The comprehensive and in-depth protection and continuation of cultural heritage is like a path of succession from generation to generation. Making way for the ruins has become a tradition spanning more than 40 years in Hangzhou. In the 1980s, it was discovered that the "104 National Highway" passed through important Liangzhu sites such as Mojiao Mountain, and later the local transportation department changed its route and relocated it; In 2016, in order to avoid interference from transit traffic on the main body of Liangzhu Ancient City, the part of the old "104 National Highway" passing through Liangzhu Ancient City was closed and abolished, and the terrain and environment were repaired; A few years later, the Hangzhou West Ring Road project will detour 6 kilometers to avoid the site of the Liangzhu Ancient City's peripheral water conservancy system engineering, ensuring the safety of cultural relics. Behind "giving way" is the effort of Hangzhou to write an article on the protection, inheritance, and utilization of the Liangzhu Ancient City site. In the past five years, Hangzhou has taken the lead in creating a "cultural relics special zone" model for the protection and management of large archaeological sites nationwide, which includes "dedicated institutions, laws and regulations, policy systems, and digital empowerment"; Introduce the first local special regulation on the protection of major archaeological sites in China, the "Regulations on the Protection and Management of Liangzhu Site in Hangzhou City"; Part of the land transfer fee from Liangzhu New City will be used for the protection of Liangzhu Site, and the innovative mechanism of "building a new city to protect the ancient city" will be used to solve the contradiction between cultural relic protection and economic development. In response to the regulatory difficulties brought about by the wide range of Liangzhu sites, the local government has created a "Liangzhu Site 5000+Digital Application Platform" to achieve a dynamic and closed-loop protection system that can monitor changes, warn risks, trace behaviors, and advance protection. Seeking innovative applications for site protection is a long-term path. "We look forward to a heritage protection robot like ChatGPT in the future that can perceive and obtain real-time data on heritage protection management, providing suggestions and warnings for our management work." Sun Haibo, Director of the World Heritage Monitoring and Management Center at the Liangzhu Ancient City Site in Hangzhou, said. Civilization mutual learning, beauty, and shared civilization are colorful due to exchanges. Over the past five years, Liangzhu has also become a bridge that brings the world closer to China. The jade culture is the imprint carved by Liangzhu in Chinese civilization. Taking jade as the topic, Liangzhu culture has had dialogues with Sanxingdui culture, Hongshan culture, and other cultures. The Liangzhu Museum also collaborated with 17 cultural and museum units from 9 provinces and cities to hold an exhibition titled "Liangzhu and Ancient China - The 5000 Year Civilization Displayed by Jade Artifacts" at the Palace Museum. While collaborating with other civilizations in China, Liangzhu actively engages in dialogue with the world. On the 6th, the "Liangzhu Ancient City · Toledo Ancient City" dialogue between Chinese and Western civilizations was held in Hangzhou. "I was amazed by the exquisite jade artifacts and complex planning of Liangzhu Ancient City, and the diverse culture and unique architectural style of Toledo Ancient City also left me lingering. Through such exchange activities, we can better promote understanding and respect between different civilizations," said a Spanish scholar on that day. Last month, the "Liangzhu Ancient City · Acropolis of Athens" Civilization Dialogue and the "Why Civilization · Encounter Liangzhu" 2024 Global Tour respectively visited Greece and the United Kingdom. Last year, the first "Liangzhu Forum" was successfully held, with over 300 guests from 91 countries and regions participating... In the view of Xu Tianjin, the director of the Liangzhu Museum (Liangzhu Research Institute) and the chairman of the Archaeological Heritage Management Committee of the China Association for the Protection of Historical Sites and Sites, the exchange and dialogue between cultural civilizations should be a norm. We hope to showcase the 'source' and 'flow' of Liangzhu culture through cultural exchanges with different regions in China. The Liangzhu culture is a point in the 5000 year history of Chinese civilization, and its relationship with subsequent Chinese civilization requires a series of exhibitions to illustrate. We need to connect lines from different perspectives to let the people know that Liangzhu has a close connection with our current situation Xu Tianjin said. Regarding "going out", he said, "Next, in order to help us have a clearer understanding of the characteristics of Liangzhu civilization and to enable more people around the world to know and understand Liangzhu, we will also plan more exhibitions around the exchange of the four major civilizations in the world." The significance of promoting cultural prosperity and promoting development and inheritance lies in activating the greater value of culture and using culture to empower the present. ". This concept is reflected in Yuhang and is a concrete "corridor". On December 30, 2022, Yuhang proposed for the first time the plan to build the Liangzhu Cultural Corridor, with over 5000 years of Liangzhu culture as the leading figure, linking more than 2000 years of canal culture, over 1000 years of Jingshan culture, double thousand year old ancient town culture, Tiaoxi culture, and modern digital culture into a chain of beads. The digital cultural community in China (Liangzhu) is an important node among them. The community focuses on building a "digital technology+culture" industrial system, with games, animation, film and television, short videos, and other industries as the core development direction. Ma Tiansijie, the director of community operations, introduced that Liangzhu's rich cultural heritage and good entrepreneurial atmosphere have attracted many enterprises. At present, more than 300 enterprises have been attracted here. Sixiang Unlimited Holdings Limited, which has settled here, has always been committed to cultural exports. In recent years, the company has been continuously exploring how to combine AIGC with Liangzhu culture, and integrating expert resources from universities, media, and other sources to jointly promote the "online+offline" dissemination of Liangzhu culture. "Let's decide to stay, on the one hand, because of Liangzhu's over 5000 year cultural heritage, and on the other hand, the local business environment, which gives us special confidence." The vice president of the company, Yin Xiaoke, said. This month, as one of the top ten projects in the first phase of the Liangzhu Cultural Corridor, the Liangzhu 5000+Creative Park is about to open. This place integrates functions such as industrial office, exhibition activities, cultural and tourism consumption, aiming to become a landmark platform for creative industries and a highland for cultural and artistic exchanges on the Liangzhu Cultural Corridor. In the past two years, the Liangzhu Cultural International Exchange Center and Jingshan Tea Culture Park have been strategically promoting the construction of the Liangzhu Cultural Corridor in Hangzhou and Zhejiang provinces. This corridor is increasingly taking shape in the construction of landmark projects for people's livelihoods and industries, accelerating towards the goals of "cultural corridor, ecological corridor, common prosperity corridor, development corridor, and cooperation corridor". Liu Ying, member of the Standing Committee of the Hangzhou Municipal Party Committee and Secretary of the Yuhang District Party Committee, stated that Yuhang will make every effort to promote the construction of the Liangzhu Cultural Corridor, with meeting the people's aspirations for a better life as the starting point and foothold, and promoting the "Ten Major Projects" as an important carrier, continuously improving people's well-being, promoting common prosperity, and effectively transforming cultural advantages into high-quality development achievements and high-quality living standards.
