The highly anticipated second volume of Cambridge Chinese History, following the publication of the English version in 2019, has recently been published by the China Social Sciences Press. The new book, Cambridge Chinese History of Wei, Jin, Northern and Southern Dynasties, was released in Chinese and a symposium on its new book release and publication was held in Beijing on the afternoon of July 4th. Zhao Jianying, President of China Social Sciences Publishing House (left), and Nan Kaishi, Professor of History at Fortress College in South Carolina, jointly unveiled the Chinese version of the new book "Cambridge Chinese History of Wei, Jin, Northern and Southern Dynasties". The Cambridge History of the Wei, Jin, Northern and Southern Dynasties in China was compiled by 26 renowned historians from around the world, led by Albert Dien, an emeritus professor at Stanford University, and Keith N. Knapp, a professor at the History Department of the Fortress College in South Carolina. The book consists of 30 chapters, except for the introduction, and is divided into three parts, including 11 chapters on "History" in the first part, 10 chapters on "Society and Reality" in the middle part, and 9 chapters on "Culture, Religion, and Art" in the second part. Among them, the middle part separately lists "Women, Family, and Sexualized Society" and "Local Society", which is quite eye-catching. In addition, compared to other volumes already published in Cambridge Chinese History, the second volume has attracted more Chinese scholars from around the world to participate. Zhao Jianying, President of China Social Science Press, pointed out in his speech that the Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties period was one of the most complex periods in Chinese history. "Cambridge History of China's Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties" was written by top scholars from around the world, covering almost all aspects of this period, including politics, foreign relations, war, agriculture, gender, art, philosophy, material culture, local society, and music. The Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties were an era of humanistic awakening, giving more attention and reflection to individual life and death, personality and emotions, as reflected in books. The Chinese version of the new book "Cambridge Chinese History of Wei, Jin, Northern and Southern Dynasties" was first published in Beijing. Professor Nan Kaishi, who specially attended the meeting, spoke in Chinese throughout the entire process, stating that the English version of "Cambridge Chinese History of Wei, Jin, Northern and Southern Dynasties" was launched by Cambridge University Press in 2019, and the Chinese translation was published in 2024, with a fast publishing speed. The compilation principle of "Cambridge Chinese History of Wei, Jin, Northern and Southern Dynasties" also follows the consistent principle of "Cambridge Chinese History": do not use complex language, ensure that college graduates can understand it, and the author of each chapter must be an expert in the field, deeply aware of the academic frontier development in the field. Meanwhile, compared to the previous "Cambridge Chinese History" series, "Cambridge Chinese History of Wei, Jin, Northern and Southern Dynasties" has a wider content, covering fields such as literature, music, religion, and strengthening attention to the spiritual world of the people of the Six Dynasties. Dai Weihong, the chief translator of "Cambridge History of the Wei, Jin, Northern and Southern Dynasties of China" and a researcher at the Institute of Ancient History of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, explained on behalf of the translation team the origin of the Chinese version of the book title. The English version of the book title is "History of the Six Dynasties". In order for Chinese readers to more accurately grasp this historical period, it is changed to "History of the Wei, Jin, Northern and Southern Dynasties". This was one of the most creative and wise periods in Chinese history, laying an important foundation for the development of the Tang Dynasty and beyond. At the symposium on the release and publication of the new book, experts and scholars from Peking University, Tsinghua University, Capital Normal University, Central Academy of Fine Arts, Institute of Ancient History of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Beijing Normal University, and University of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences jointly witnessed the debut of the new book "Cambridge Chinese History of Wei, Jin, Northern and Southern Dynasties", and provided comments and exchange speeches on the content of the new book based on their respective research.
