Drones are here, takeout is falling from the sky

"You can also order takeout for outdoor outings, and it can be delivered in a few minutes!" At the "Sky Eye" drone test base in the mountainous area of Pengzhou, Chengdu, Sichuan, Tan Xiaoxue opened the "Send it by Air" mobile app and ordered a cup of coffee. In less than ten minutes, a drone landed steadily on the platform in front of it, opened the cargo box, and placed a cup of coffee inside. Tan Xiaoxue is the head of the Enterprise Development Division of Sichuan Xiangpeng Zhihang Technology Co., Ltd., the operator of the "Sky Eye" unmanned aerial vehicle test base. When working at the base, she occasionally orders an air takeout for herself, which includes coffee, drinks, snacks, meals, and even hot pot toppings, and can be delivered with anything! It is reported that this logistics drone is operated remotely by the operator, without the need for professional pilots. The delivery sender's staff only need to load the items, complete the inspection, notify the backend on the system, and the drone will directly take off and perform delivery tasks according to the scheduled route. "The delivery routes we have opened cover more than 30 locations such as outdoor camping sites, homestays, and scenic spots, making it difficult for delivery drivers to reach the countryside. There are also 'express delivery stations' where tourists can pick up goods at the selected stations after placing orders on their mobile phones." Tan Xiaoxue said that Pengzhou is a hot area for outdoor tourism, and since its launch, the service has been warmly welcomed by tourists, especially during the flower viewing season, with over 100 flights flying every day. In August 2022, "Sky Eye" was officially approved as a national level civil unmanned aerial test base. In December 2023, Sichuan officially launched the third batch of low altitude collaborative management airspace, and Pengzhou's "Sky Eye" was also added as a dedicated airspace for drone test flights, which can meet the needs of enterprises for regular flight testing. In addition to air delivery, the base also attracts more than 90 enterprises to carry out research and development testing business, with an average daily flight volume of over 100 aircraft and more than 50 important technical breakthroughs. Various business formats such as pilot training, license exams, aircraft model competitions, research activities, and drone exhibitions are also rapidly expanding. (Lai Xin She)
