Hanyin, Shaanxi: Experience the Rhythm of Rural Revitalization in Ancient Terraced Fields
2024-07-01
In the midsummer season, the Qinba Mountains are shrouded in water vapor, forming a vast sea of clouds in the mountains. Xuanwo Town is located in the hinterland of the Qinba Mountains, between Fenghuang Mountain and the Han River. It is named after the huge vortex formed by the turning of the Han River channel. There is currently the largest and most well preserved Qing Dynasty terraced field discovered in the Qinba Mountain area in Xuanwo Town - Fengyan Ancient Terraced Field. This "old grain field" with an area of over 12000 acres and a history of more than 200 years is built on the terrain of the mountains. The first step terraced fields are extended and laid out along the mountain range, showcasing the wisdom of traditional Chinese agriculture. "Fengyan Ancient Terraced Fields and Canal System is developed, with smooth drainage and complete facilities, which is the crystallization of natural beauty and human wisdom." Li Quanbing, an engineer from the Water Resources Bureau of Hanyin County, said that in the process of intensive cultivation, the local people in Hanyin have summarized an ecological agricultural production technology that integrates water storage, soil conservation, and yield increase. With the simplest engineering facilities, minimal maintenance, and sustainable engineering management, the maximum benefits of land reclamation and agricultural production have been achieved. Fengyan terraced fields mainly rely on self flow irrigation. Due to sufficient rainfall, the two crops planted in the terraced fields, corn and rapeseed, have achieved stable and high yields for consecutive years. Zeng Xiangjun, born in 2001, although not very old, is already the head of Zhanchuang Family Farm in Xuanwo Town, Hanyin County, managing over 80 acres of terraced fields and more than 50 yellow cattle. In recent years, he has been actively exploring the development model of ecological agriculture. In Zeng Xiangjun's eyes, yellow cattle manure and rapeseed straw are excellent organic fertilizers that can maintain soil fertility as smooth as oil paste; Self grown corn can also provide silage feed for cattle, achieving resource recycling. "The biggest feature of our farm is not applying pesticides and fertilizers, and using biological control to eliminate diseases and pests." He said that relying on cattle sales and rapeseed oil grinding, the farm's annual income is stable at over 400000 yuan. It is precisely by relying on the green waters and mountains of the whirlpool town that our family farm can develop healthily. As rural revitalization turns from a vision to a reality, the popularity of Fengyan terraced fields continues to increase. During holidays, the terraced fields are surrounded by tourists who take photos and experience farming. The local government is actively building a comprehensive tourism demonstration zone for terraced agriculture, launching cultural and tourism projects with themes such as leisure and health preservation, terraced sightseeing, and mountain tourism, achieving an annual reception of 600000 tourists and a comprehensive annual tourism revenue of over 1 billion yuan. The strong popularity has also driven the homestay industry in Xuanwo Town. Xuanwo Town revitalizes idle farmhouses and transforms old houses that preserve their original appearance into high-end homestays, with Huaqi Yue Homestay being one of them. "Since its operation in July last year until the end of the year, the entire project has brought more than 80000 yuan in dividends to the village collective," said Liu Xiang, the person in charge of the homestay operation. "Nowadays, many farmers come here to work part-time during the idle season to increase their income.". After retiring and returning to his hometown, Wu Dashun, a 68 year old villager from Cigou Village in Xuanwo Town, started a farmhouse and hopes to participate in the development of his hometown. He said, "Since its opening, my rice, local honey, pheasant, and vegetables have been very popular among tourists. In the future, I plan to continue expanding my business scale, telling the story of the ancient terraced fields in Fengyan, and letting more people understand the happy place where we have lived for generations."
