National Action to Promote Elderly Hearing Health

Recently, the National Health Commission issued a notice deciding to organize a nationwide action to promote elderly hearing health from 2024 to 2027. This action aims to guide elderly people to enhance their awareness of hearing health, cultivate scientific ear habits, and actively maintain hearing health; Promote early screening, detection, and intervention of hearing loss in the elderly, and reduce or delay the occurrence of hearing loss in the elderly; Improve the prevention and control level of elderly hearing loss and the ability to provide elderly hearing health services. Hearing loss not only directly leads to communication barriers, affects quality of life and social participation, but also increases the risk of mental illness and dementia in the elderly. According to the notice, the promotion action for elderly hearing health includes four aspects: strengthening the popularization of science on elderly hearing health, vigorously promoting scientific knowledge related to ear protection and hearing health, and transforming the traditional concept that "the back of the ear is a natural law for the elderly"; Carry out elderly hearing screening and intervention, advocate for areas with conditions to provide professional hearing screening for elderly people in need; Strengthen specialized training and team building for the prevention and control of hearing loss in the elderly, and research and develop guidelines for community elderly hearing screening and intervention; Support public welfare activities for elderly hearing health, organize relevant professional and technical personnel to go deep into communities, institutions, etc. to popularize hearing health knowledge for the elderly, provide free diagnosis and public welfare services such as hearing tests and intervention guidance, and help improve the hearing loss situation of the elderly.
