Musical "Ocean Concerto": Immersed in a "blue atmosphere" with children

2024-06-28

The "Ocean Concerto" still depicts the beach constantly linked to the skyline, with waves seemingly chasing after clouds. Children stroll in a peaceful "blue atmosphere", as the waves gently tap the rocks on the shore. The calm splashing waves keep repeating behind, as if they want to pat everything into a transparent blue. In the finale of the 33rd Macau Art Festival, what is the Macau Contemporary Art Center? Maritime Workshop 2 presented the immersive interactive classical music enlightenment drama "Ocean Concerto" created for infants and young children aged 0-6 with the theme of marine environmental protection. The drama was composed by DKS Shanghai in collaboration with the Royal Conservatory of Music composer Dominic? Dominic Harlan adopts the concept of Junk Orchestra, which is popular in Europe and North America, and uses fully handmade recyclable materials for stage art production. The play is directed by Chen Fangjie; Harlan serves as the music director, composer, and arranger; Starring Wang Haining. This drama breaks the boundaries and performance forms of a framed stage, creating a fully immersive music theater that combines people and music with a sea of people. There is no precedent for the parallel enlightenment of music and public education on the theme of the sea, making this play a model in children's enlightenment dramas. The drama is performed in a maritime workshop adjacent to the sea, and the entire sea area seems to have become a metaphor for the stage. At the invitation of the Macau Art Festival, I, as an art critic, watched the "Ocean Concerto" with my 6-year-old daughter. As soon as my daughter entered the theater, she saw a large area of blue silk laid on the ground, with free wrinkles seemingly flowing. She said, "We are playing the role of the ocean." We are not only imitating the ocean, but we are also a part of it. When the sea suddenly stood up with the actor's body, the sea also stood up, sweeping the children together, relaxed but not losing tension, flowing until the sea turned blue. Swedish poet Transtrom once described the Baltic Sea as follows: "It is a calm and boundless roof." As the light blue silk fabric covers the audience in a rhythm, it creates a blue wave that crosses people's heads and runs towards the rear, the sea indeed becomes the roof in motion. My heart beats rhythmically with the sound of bubbles, and the children feel the gentle "caress" of the waves. When a distant and flickering rhythm came from the sea. From shallow to deep sea, layer by layer, soft sand settles and turns into rocks on the ocean floor. Ocean creatures with a keen sense of music dance and sway to the rhythm, catching the waves in their sight. They seem to be discussing the news of a new day happening in the ocean, foreshadowing the beginning of a new day from the ocean. The performance of the Ocean Concerto reorganizes selected passages from famous classical music works and blends original music. Under the guidance of actors and music, adults and children immerse themselves in interactive music games, immersing themselves in the colorful interior of the ocean with notes, listening carefully to the voices of marine creatures, and thus gaining new stimulation in the audience's five senses. We see not only various shades of blue, but also seem to feel the salinity. Actors take dolphins and children into the ocean together, and they become members of the ocean, giving them new insights into protecting the ocean and animals. My daughter said, "We seem to have really walked into the ocean. But the creatures in the ocean are in an abnormal state. They seem to have suffered a disaster, and the ocean has turned into a sad ocean. The actors put mineral water bottles into the mouths of dolphins, and we cannot eat these things. The ocean cannot have these plastic bottles." My daughter has a deep affection for the ocean, and she once made a wish on her birthday to "go see the ocean.". She started attending European literary and artistic festivals in countries and regions adjacent to the sea before she was even one year old, and watched some performances. However, this was her first time participating in an immersive interactive classical music enlightenment drama with the theme of the sea, and she had an extraordinary touchpoint. The sea led her to reach a wide cognitive territory. The pure and clear clarinet unfolds the waves of the ocean, while the deep and profound double bass listens to the singing of the ocean. The piano pieces personally recorded by music director Harlan in London sparkle with the rhythmic dance of the ocean's waves, sometimes light, sometimes ethereal, sometimes rapid, sometimes melodious, and the ever-changing and jumping rhythms touch the hearts of every listener. Interleaving, dispersing, and recombining gradually lead the viewer from the sparkling waves of the sea to the colorful and splendid depths of the seabed. Everyone is enveloped in music and undergoes a "poetic dance" according to the laws of imagination. It permeates the audience's skin, and the ears, eyes, body, and soul are filled with an open path connecting to the sea, even mobilizing the five senses, six senses, or eight senses. Since ancient times, music critics have believed that "Bach's music is not a stream, but a sea." His name is almost integrated with the sea. When Bach's melody plays in the Ocean Concerto, it seems like the secret performance of the underwater world has been made public for the first time. The arrangement of excerpts from Bach's minuets immerses children from the sea level into the colorful ocean world, and the calm and composed music style guides children's attention and becomes a part of the rhythm. The minuet dance music sways and exudes a myriad of postures, immersing children in a rhythmic underwater world - the water plants in underwater caves shimmer like night light; Hidden in the colorful coral are large crabs waving and swaying; The little jellyfish, who seemed to be calling for their mother, emitted a faint yet mysterious light, becoming a source of light for the ocean. Especially the lantern fish from the deep sea seem to have been infected by children, and the spots on their heads start to appear and send out hidden signals. Children seem to become a part of the underwater world here, leaving them with a multitude of confusing question marks and endless echoes. A short piece of music can develop into a vast ocean. A song by composer Soute? The whimsical piece created by Maester for his clarinet solo suddenly changed the atmosphere of the sea through continuous musicality. The syllables were scattered and floated up, and the entire ocean was covered. Through the syllables, one could see a completely rotating world: children chased the playful seahorses and octopuses with their fantasies, imitating each other's voices in a whimsical song. The tone of the whimsical song constantly changes, and through the conversion of tones, the hippocampus and octopus also exchange mysterious information in the seabed, and their friendship ferments slightly in the range of the clarinet. Aquarium is played with a gentle arpeggios on the piano, like the ripples of clear water in a glass aquarium. The notes on the glass cup lead to a serene melody, recounting the rippling water surface, the beams of sunlight shining directly on the bottom of the clear water, and the diverse schools of fish swimming leisurely. The pianist repeats the theme melody in late half time and the multiple slides that appear near the end, like the shining dots of fish scales in the sunlight. The sound of the children eagerly stepping onto the stage seemed to be re tapping the glass in the notes, stepping into the time tunnel, crossing into another ocean, crossing into another self. However, in the tunnel filled with the ideal vision of the ocean, the rubbing and poking sound of potato chip bags brings people back to reality - the ocean has been polluted for a long time, affecting the marine ecosystem and human health. How can children cross all of this? Every child has their own little dolphin story. Amid, a young dolphin, accidentally stumbled into a fishing net abandoned by humans while playing in the sea. The melody of the famous Italian composer Correlli's La Foglia highlights his restlessness and anxiety in his struggle. (This dance originated from Portuguese folk music, where "Foglia" means "noisy, crazy" in Portuguese, and "Foglia" is a wild Portuguese dance piece), and he gradually begins to feel sad in Mozart's arrangement until despair. How was a little dolphin rescued? Can music save it? Little dolphins play carefree in the ocean. With a loud bang, the whole room seemed to be in silent mode, and the children's expressions of disappointment were revealed one by one. The "plastic bottle ocean" created by humans revealed its original appearance. Plastic pollution in the ocean not only occurs in fish bodies, but also in the sea salt we eat daily. This increasingly serious problem poses a serious threat to the Earth's ecosystem, suffocating marine life and destroying human habitats. Every second of every scene touches the young hearts of the children, and even when the performance ends, they reluctantly turn back to look at the little dolphin. Can the original appearance of marine ecology be restored? Until the waves receded, the children were still unsatisfied and wanted to follow the melody of Mozart and Corelli as they sailed through the sea. Adults and children are enlightened together in the blue state of the Ocean Concerto, and adults are also born again in the direction of childhood, immersed in the blue experience. My daughter and I walked out of the maritime workshop and towards the sea next to the theater, continuing our summer afternoon ocean concerto under the scorching sun. (Lai Xin She)
