Seize the opportunity to make the "offshore gold industry" shine brightly

2024-06-28

A cruise ship is a mobile city on the sea, containing enormous development potential. In recent years, the cruise industry has been hailed as the "golden industry floating on the sea" due to its long industrial chain, wide coverage, strong economic driving force and adsorption power, and has become a hot spot for marine economic development that port cities are competing to pursue. Data shows that from 2006 to 2017, the total number of cruise ships received by Chinese cruise ports reached 5807, and the number of inbound and outbound tourists received reached 18.1354 million. Since China fully resumed international cruise transportation in 2023, the demand for cruise tourism has been concentrated and released, which not only injects development confidence into the domestic tourism market, but also provides new opportunities for exchanges and exchanges between Chinese and foreign personnel and global economic development. Nowadays, the first domestically produced large cruise ship, "Aida Modu", has successfully operated 37 voyages and served over 150000 tourists. Driven by domestically produced large cruise ships, the construction of the entire cruise industry chain ecosystem is accelerating. So, how can the "offshore gold industry" seize the current good opportunity? From the introduction of visa free policies for some countries, the restoration of 72/144 hour transit visa free and cruise ship visa free services in some cities, further expanding the opening strategy for the international tourism market, optimizing payment services to improve payment convenience, and finally the official implementation of the "Regulations on International Cruise Ship Supply at Ports of the People's Republic of China", a series of policy measures have been introduced recently, including smooth supply of goods and supplies, convenient customs clearance measures, etc., which have opened up the development "route" for the cruise industry. With policy guarantees, we still need to take our own steps towards development. Moreover, it will take some time for multiple policy measures to emerge from their release to the actual manifestation of their cumulative effects. Therefore, how to effectively utilize the "window of opportunity" to fully unleash policy dividends has become a crucial step in the development of the cruise industry. The promotion of new development in the cruise industry cannot be achieved without the cooperation between the upstream and downstream of the industry chain. China's modern industrial system has a complete range of categories, and different industrial advantages in different regions also have the basic conditions for cooperation. From the upstream of the industrial chain, it is necessary to leverage the advantages of some regions in the manufacturing industry, especially in shipbuilding, to further improve the localization rate of the cruise ship construction supply chain, and take this as an opportunity to accelerate the construction of an independent innovation system in the cruise industry. In the middle reaches of the industry chain, it is necessary to establish a sound investment management system for the cruise industry, improve the ecological construction of port operations, and expand the fleet size of domestic cruise enterprises. From the downstream of the industrial chain, it is necessary to enhance the development capacity of cruise tourism routes and further enhance the added value of cruise tourism products. It is worth noting that although the development of the cruise industry has a strong driving effect on the economy, it is not a long-term effect. Therefore, it is necessary to cultivate more competitive cruise industry clusters, enhance the international influence of China's cruise industry brands, and transform short-term "passing through" effects into sustainable development "landing" capabilities. For example, coastal cities such as Shanghai and Guangzhou may use cruise ships as a carrier to integrate urban resources, fully mobilize the enthusiasm of various business entities in the cruise industry, launch more new consumption scenarios of "cruise+" and "+cruise" series, attract well-known domestic and international commercial entities and consumer brands to gather, and create a global cruise consumption destination. In the end, better exploration of the "offshore gold industry" is still supported by forging a hard core capability. I believe that with the gradual development of China's cruise market, more and more foreign tourists will compete to come to China, and international exchanges will become closer. The shining "offshore gold industry" will continue to add new impetus to the global economy. (Lai Xin She)
