Reminder from relevant departments: Do not fish or purchase edible sea rainbow in the near future

2024-06-27

Recently, staff from the Ocean and Fisheries Bureau of Qinhuangdao City, Hebei Province, collected three samples of sea rainbow in the Shanhaiguan area and found that their levels of paralytic shellfish toxins exceeded normal values. Among them, the highest value of paralyzing shellfish toxin contained in one sample exceeded the judgment limit by 4.68 times, indicating a very high food safety risk. Data shows that paralyzing shellfish toxins can cause muscle paralysis in the limbs, headache, nausea, drooling, fever, and in severe cases, respiratory arrest. Every June, there is a large amount of toxic single-cell algae in seawater. Seabows and other shellfish accumulate toxins in their bodies after consuming these algae. These toxins have good heat resistance and cannot be completely eliminated by high-temperature cooking. In order to ensure food safety and prevent poisoning incidents caused by consuming sea rainbow, the marine fishery department of Hebei Province has comprehensively strengthened maritime inspections and supervision of fishing ports and docks, prohibiting fishermen from collecting and fishing for sea rainbow. The Market Supervision Administration of Qinhuangdao City requires food operators to completely prohibit the sale of sea rainbow and the processing and production of sea rainbow products. The relevant departments in Hebei Province remind the general public not to fish, purchase, or consume sea rainbow in the near future, as well as bivalves from sources with safety hazards. When consuming other shellfish, it is important to remove the internal organs and avoid consuming too much at once. Once symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and muscle paralysis occur when consuming seafood, it is necessary to immediately rush to the hospital for treatment. (Lai Xin She)
