Make good use of digital technology to promote the dissemination of Peking Opera

2024-06-27

Wang Junyi, born in 1985, is a Beijing Opera enthusiast. His connection with Peking Opera began in his childhood. My grandmother is a Peking Opera fan who often points to the Peking Opera on TV and teaches Wang Junyi how to distinguish different professions through facial makeup, costumes, and singing. Sometimes, his grandmother also takes him to the theater to listen to the play. Amidst the drumbeat, Grandma hummed softly along with the actors, leaving a warm scene deeply ingrained in Wang Junyi's memory. As he grew older and developed a deeper interest in Peking Opera, Wang Junyi had always wanted to do something to promote it. In 2018, the Propaganda Department of Xicheng District Committee of Beijing launched the "Birthplace of Peking Opera" cultural brand project, one of which is to promote the dissemination and promotion of Peking Opera culture through the integration of culture and technology. How to promote Beijing Opera art in a way that ordinary people can understand and have new ideas? After receiving the task, Wang Junyi, who was then the assistant general manager of Beijing Nuo Yi Teng Technology Co., Ltd., pondered hard. In the end, he decided to use immersive storytelling favored by young people to present participatory Beijing Opera scenes, and the project was named "Shuju Jingyun". Over the course of four months, more than 110 technical personnel and artists participated in the interactive VR of "Listening to Songs from Hubei and Guangxi", holographic Peking Opera from "Sanchakou", and "Grand Scenery of Beijing". In the 2019 Spring Festival, the "Digital Inheritance and Creative Experience Series of Peking Opera with Digital Drama and Beijing Rhyme" was unveiled at the Beijing Square, which was refreshing. The multiplayer VR of "Listening to Songs from Hubei and Guangxi" adopts the immersive virtual reality interaction technology independently developed by Noyiteng Company. After four viewers put on VR headsets, they will see scenes of Qing Dynasty painted boats in front of them. Guided by a virtual navigator, the audience can overlook the beautiful scenery of Beijing over 200 years ago, and then travel to the Huguang Guild Hall, which is reconstructed according to a 1:1 digital model, to enjoy the classic performance of Peking Opera in person. The Peking Opera "Sanchakou" is very popular, and there is a scene where two actors fight in the dark at a late night inn, which is also known as a classic. In traditional Beijing opera, audiences can only watch actors perform on stage from a certain distance. In the VR experience, viewers can not only "step onto" the stage in a virtual space and enjoy the wonderful performances of two Peking Opera actors from zero distance, but also "cross" into the story of "San Cha Kou", feeling the highly realistic fighting scenes in the environment, and the experience is more diverse. This digital product utilizes various technologies such as 3D spatial scanning, 3D human scanning, and digital modeling, among which motion capture is the most commonly used technology. "Action capture technology can make up for the regret of traditional Chinese opera being difficult to watch up close, record every exciting action, and then present a stunning visual effect through rendering processing." Wang Junyi introduced. The third phase of the "Digital Inheritance and Creative Experience Series of Peking Opera" - "Prosperous Huazhang · Drama in Life" was held a few years ago at the Anhui Guild Hall, a historical and cultural building in Xicheng District. After receiving the script, eight viewers were divided into two groups: "Homeland" and "Drama Troupe". They experienced "Drama Garden Culture" and "Drama Troupe Culture" respectively, and experienced the charm of Peking Opera culture through physical objects and real-life scenes. In recent years, "Shuju Jingyun" has made appearances at events such as the Service Trade Fair and Beijing Animation Week, with a total of more than 15000 viewers. "Peking Opera is an important component of China's excellent traditional culture and a vivid carrier for telling Chinese stories well." Wang Junyi said that the team will continue to explore the application of more new technologies, allowing Peking Opera to shine more brilliantly in the digital world. (Lai Xin She)
