Davos and China Join Hands to Build an Open World Economy
2024-06-26
The 15th Annual Meeting of New Leaders of the World Economic Forum (referred to as the Summer Davos Forum), with the theme of "New Frontiers of Future Growth", was held in Dalian, Liaoning Province, China from June 25th to 27th. The World Economic Forum was founded in 1971 and is an unofficial international organization headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland. It takes the main form of "joint discussion and sharing of experience" to explore cutting-edge topics of world economic and social development, and promote international economic cooperation and exchanges. In 1979, China had just opened its doors with a new attitude of reform and opening up. The Davos Forum keenly foresaw that this ancient Eastern power would rise to become an important force in the global economic map, and invited China to join the forum as a formal member. China also sent a delegation to attend the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum for the first time. For many years, China's annual contribution rate to global economic growth has exceeded 30%, and it has become a driving force and stabilizer of the global economy. Therefore, since 2007, the World Economic Forum has been tailor-made for China and holds the annual World New Leaders Conference, also known as the Summer Davos Forum, in Dalian or Tianjin every year. Except for a three-year suspension due to the COVID-19, the Summer Davos Forum has never been absent. This year, it is the 15th session, and has gradually become an important window for global people to understand China's economic situation, as well as an important platform for entrepreneurs from all over the world to explore the Chinese market. From the beautiful towns in the Alps to the romantic capital at the junction of the Yellow and Bohai Seas, the World Economic Forum has formed an inseparable bond with China, becoming a witness to China's continuous expansion and sharing of development opportunities with countries around the world. This fate stems from the similarity of ideas and convergence of positions between China and the forum on the issue of economic globalization. Since its establishment, the World Economic Forum has regarded promoting international economic cooperation and exchange as its mission, and the concept of open cooperation is engraved in its genes. China also actively participates in international division of labor and cooperation, actively integrates into global economic development, especially in recent years, China has become a practitioner in maintaining and developing an open world economy. In January 2017, he delivered a keynote speech titled "Sharing the Responsibility of the Times and Promoting Global Development" at the opening ceremony of the 2017 World Economic Forum, pointing out that "integrating into the world economy is the historical direction" and emphasizing that "China will vigorously build a pattern of opening up for common development". In his keynote speech at the opening ceremony of the third "the Belt and Road" International Cooperation Summit Forum, he solemnly announced "support for building an open world economy". The Chinese side's proposal is also the voice of the World Economic Forum. Forum founder Schwab still remembers these ideas deeply, stating that they are "widely popular and have a profound impact.". At present, the world has entered a period of turbulence and change, with some countries building "small courtyards and high walls" under the guise of "security", distorting the global industrial and supply chains, casting a heavy shadow on economic globalization, and making the already slowing global economic growth even more difficult. From this perspective, the theme of this forum, "New Frontiers of Future Growth," clearly has a profound meaning. In 2023, the added value of China's equipment manufacturing industry increased by 6.8% year-on-year, while investment in high-tech manufacturing and high-tech service industries increased by 9.9% and 11.4% respectively. Innovative application scenarios such as new technologies, new industries, new formats, and new models continue to emerge, indicating that the contribution of China's economy to world economic growth is not only reflected in quantity, but also in quality. China has undoubtedly become a pioneer in developing new technologies that drive future growth. China also hopes to share its own experience through the Summer Davos Forum, promote inclusive, balanced, and sustainable growth of the world economy, and explore more valuable cutting-edge technologies and concepts with all parties. Even mountains and seas cannot distance people with common aspirations. This year's Summer Davos Forum will have more like-minded individuals working with China to focus on cutting-edge technology and advanced concepts for future development. Communication and exchange will replace smearing accusations, and mutual benefit will replace zero sum games. This will inject proactive action into the sluggish global economy and bring dawn of development to the world in a haze. (Lai Xin She)
