On June 22nd, the mainland premiere of the documentary film "Classmates" was held in Shenzhen. The premiere was jointly organized by the film producer, Sun Yat sen University Shenzhen Alumni Association, and Sun Yat sen University Shenzhen Industry University Research Foundation. At the premiere, the audience took a group photo and Tai Zhongzhi, Vice President of Sun Yat sen University, delivered a speech: "During the War of Resistance Against Japan, a group of schools represented by Sun Yat sen University and Lingnan University migrated to Shaoguan, Meizhou, and other places, and persevered in running schools during difficult times, cultivating numerous outstanding talents. The teaching and research achievements formed at that time played an important role in supporting the construction of the rear area and rallying the anti Japanese forces, and wrote a brilliant chapter in the history of modern Chinese education. The film's creative team worked tirelessly to travel to the school's former location, contacted predecessors and descendants for interviews, and even went abroad to shoot. After four years of careful polishing, the film was finally produced." Let us have the opportunity to revisit the arduous past of our alma mater's commitment to education during times of crisis. This journey has preserved precious bloodlines for education in southern China and even Taiwan. It is a glorious history worth remembering forever and a precious historical heritage of CUHK After the movie was released, the creators exchanged ideas with the audience, including Huang Haibo, the chief producer of the film "Classmates", and Gu Lei, the planner and screenwriter. They shared more stories behind the film and unforgettable experiences filmed in Shaoguan, Yunfu, Hong Kong and Macau. Huang Haibo believes that the biggest difficulty in the filming process was the lack of historical materials, but thanks to the volunteers from Guangdong Province's "Three Teachers", they have been tirelessly working to excavate and protect this period of history, and have done a lot of groundwork for the birth of this film. He also shared with everyone that "the film did not confront the cruel war environment directly, but instead used a sublimated form of expression to describe the story of a group of gentlemen." Gu Lei said that due to the length of the film, many exciting stories were not presented one by one. For example, Ma Sicong and his wife Wang Muli held regular concerts in Pingshi to cheer on teachers and students, with Ma Sicong playing the violin and Wang Muli playing the piano; Mr. Lu Hefu returned from the United States and went to northern Guangdong. Despite extremely difficult conditions, he still maintained an optimistic spirit, humming Peking Opera while chopping wood, setting fire, and cooking; National Sun Yat sen University School of Medicine lost a large number of instruments during the relocation process. The male classmate smashed the glass bottle and manually ground a concave convex mirror at the bottom of the bottle to replace the microscope. Chen Yifan, a 2012 graduate of Sun Yat sen University and a current faculty member at CUHK Shenzhen Campus, shared her reflections on the film: The film fully showcases the profound friendship between Chinese adults and teachers and students from the entire South China region who worked together during the Anti Japanese War, and feels the delicate, vivid, and strong life under the grand background. In the past, we knew where we were and where we were going, but this movie tells us where we came from. It was the precious wealth that every ancestor saved for us in the war with their hands, feet, knowledge, and perseverance. It is now that we have the opportunity to sit in a peaceful and clean campus, enjoying modern teaching equipment and advanced teaching concepts. (Lai Xin She)
