China strengthens the protection and restoration of migratory bird migration channels
2024-06-25
On the 24th, the National Development and Reform Commission announced that in order to comprehensively strengthen the protection and restoration of migratory bird migration channels in China, the Commission, together with the Ministry of Finance and the National Forestry and Grassland Administration, has formulated the "Action Plan for the Protection and Restoration of Migratory Bird Migration Channels in China (2024-2030)", proposing to include 90% of key habitats in migratory bird migration channels in effective protection areas and more than 80% of migratory bird species in effective monitoring by 2030. According to statistics, there are over 1500 bird species in China, accounting for 13% of the world's bird species. Among them, there are over 800 species of migratory birds, accounting for approximately 53% of the total bird species in China. Four of the nine major migration routes for birds worldwide pass through China, namely the East Asia Australia migration route, Central Asia migration route, West Asia East Africa migration route, and the Western Pacific migration route. At present, the protection of migratory birds and their habitats in China is showing a good overall improvement trend, but there are still some habitats facing threats, the protection management system is not yet perfect, resource monitoring capabilities urgently need to be strengthened, and the social protection atmosphere needs to be improved. The action plan is clear, taking into account indicators such as the number of threatened migratory bird species, the proportion of migratory bird populations to global migration routes, and the number of migratory birds, 821 key habitats for migratory bird migration routes have been selected. By comprehensively strengthening protection management and ecological restoration, we aim to achieve overall collaborative protection of four migratory bird migration channels in China. The action plan proposes four main actions, including the construction of a migration channel protection network, restoration of key habitats, improvement of investigation and monitoring capabilities, and human bird friendliness. Measures will be taken to improve the protection network, control habitat pollution, prevent and control invasive species, establish a sound data collection system, and build human bird friendly communities.
