Green Slope and Red Persimmon Garden - Observations on Soil and Water Loss Control in Fuping, Shaanxi
2024-06-24
The summer solstice has passed, and the scorching sun on the Guanzhong Plain in Shaanxi is like fire. The vehicle drove through the wheat fields and persimmon gardens on both sides of the road, where the altitude continued to climb, while the greenery extended from before to the distant slopes. "Come and taste our ice cream persimmons." Mo Daiwu, Secretary of the Party Branch of Sanhe Village, Zhuangli Town, Fuping County, Shaanxi Province, opened a plastic box. The reporter put the round and yellow ice persimmon into his mouth, and the heat was immediately driven away halfway. "Compared to traditional persimmon cakes, ice persimmons have higher water content and slightly lower sugar content, making them popular among young people nowadays. They have been on the market for two years in May and June, and are sold out every time." Mo Daiwu said. The persimmon cakes made from Fuping persimmons have a large size, a smooth taste, and a sweet and fragrant taste, making them a famous delicacy with a sharp tongue. "In the past, there was limited land, and planting one plant here and one plant there didn't have a decent scale," Mo Daiwu told reporters. Many villages, like Sanhe Village, located in the northern mountainous alluvial fan area of Fuping County, although it was also a traditional persimmon production area for decades, were at most scattered in front and behind houses. "The area of the slope is not small, but it is very barren and lacks irrigation conditions. There is severe soil erosion, and nothing can be planted." Yang Zhengchuan, a 55 year old farmer from Yangjia Village in Zhuangli Town, still vividly remembers the scene of rainwater carrying mud and sand rushing on the barren mountains in the past. Since 2012, the Yangjia area of Zhuangli Town, including Yangjia Village, has successively implemented national key projects for soil and water conservation, comprehensive agricultural development, and comprehensive management of soil and water loss on sloping farmland. This not only brings green to the barren slopes, reduces natural disasters, but also provides farmers with greater space to grow crops and persimmon trees. "This area alone has planted over 5500 acres of persimmon gardens, turning ecological loopholes into green barriers." According to Zhou Qi, Director of the Soil and Water Conservation and Immigration Work Center in Fuping County, over the past decade, the area of soil erosion in Fuping County has been controlled by 573.76 square kilometers, and the overall soil and water conservation rate has reached 89.76%. In the comprehensive management of soil and water conservation at the southern foot of Qiaoshan Mountain in Fuping County, Shanxi Village area is covered with semi-circular or crescent shaped tree pits, which look like fish scales when viewed from afar, forming one after another "fish scale pits". By storing water in the pit and planting trees, the survival rate is greatly improved, and regional soil erosion is effectively controlled. People will not betray the green mountains, and the green mountains will not betray them. Thanks to this, Yang Zhengchuan's five or six acre persimmon orchard gradually expanded to over 4000 acres, becoming one of the top persimmon growers in the county. "If the total output comes up, we need to find a market for persimmons." Yang Jiacun Party Branch Secretary Qiao Binbin said. In 2012, he returned to his hometown and led the villagers to start a persimmon e-commerce business, which was originally a part-time job selling his own persimmon cakes in an online store. Nowadays, in the Xinnongren Persimmon Industry Park in Yangjia Village, everything from intelligent sorting and drying workshops to cold storage and live streaming rooms, from traditional persimmon cakes to new products such as persimmon vinegar and wine, has become one of the few distribution centers for persimmon storage, processing, and sales in the county. It is understood that among the more than 360000 mu of persimmon tree planting area in Fuping County, one-third of the area is managed through soil and water conservation. With scale, the fiery red persimmons show a greater "gold content". At present, Fuping County produces 280000 tons of fresh persimmons and 70000 tons of persimmon cakes annually, with a total industrial chain output value of 6.5 billion yuan. There are 130000 people directly engaged in the persimmon industry in the county, with over 200000 people embedded in the persimmon industry chain, driving an annual per capita income increase of more than 5000 yuan for the people. "The ecological environment has improved, the development path has widened, and young people are willing to come back." Qiao Binbin said that as of the end of last year, there were over 200 "returning geese" in the village, showcasing their talents in various aspects such as persimmon planting, product processing, and live streaming sales. I have been interviewing and training many returning youth recently. When the persimmons mature this autumn, the persimmon garden will definitely become even more prosperous Qiao Binbin said.
