Strengthen the supervision of the dissemination of medical fake science popularization videos
2024-06-19
In recent years, some pseudo science popularization short videos mixed with scientific concepts and professional terms have been spread on social media, such as "rotating the eyeball and alternating focus between far and near distances can reduce myopia", "honey and pollen contain a large amount of small molecular peptides, which can be used to fight against allergies with poison", and "using scientific concepts and professional terminology". These fake science popularization short videos are highly deceptive and widely spread, causing many netizens to be deceived. Stripping off the guise of pseudo science popularization and creating a clear online ecosystem is the expectation of the vast number of netizens. In the Internet era, people have more diversified and convenient ways to obtain information, and the demand for unknown information is stronger. The cost of video production is low, but the traffic and revenue are very considerable. This has led some people to take risks and create fake science popularization short videos to profit. Dragging on a few scientific concepts and using a few professional jargon cannot conceal the essence of fake science popularization, deceiving people and money. Pseudo science popularization information can affect people's correct cognition, and in severe cases, it may endanger life safety. For example, some patients believe the advice in fake health science popularization videos, stop taking medication, change medication, and replace prescription medication with designated products at will. We cannot let fake science popularization short videos go unchecked, and should strengthen supervision and provide positive feedback. The National Health Commission and other departments recently jointly issued a notice requiring increased supervision of medical online live streaming sales, information content, and dissemination order, continuously improving and perfecting the joint disposal mechanism for medical online live streaming, which adds a firewall to medical and health information. From the reality, the various forms of pseudo science popularization and the wide range of information subjects involved pose challenges to effective governance. To address this issue, relevant departments should keep up with the times and expand regulatory toolboxes, while platform enterprises should also strengthen content management. On the one hand, the ability to identify and judge the quality level of hot topic information should be improved, and a response mechanism should be provided; On the other hand, high-quality content should be given more traffic weight and good coins should be used to drive out bad coins. Not long ago, students from universities such as Tsinghua University taught physics problem-solving skills on short video platforms, shared relevant knowledge, and received attention and praise. Such high-quality popular science content should receive platform support, gain more dissemination, and provide positive incentives for the supply of high-quality content, which will help spread scientific knowledge and improve the overall scientific literacy of society.
