The core indicators of children's health in China continue to improve, surpassing the average level of middle and high-income countries worldwide

At a recent press conference held by the National Health Commission, Shen Haiping, Deputy Director of the Maternal and Child Health Department of the National Health Commission, introduced that in recent years, the health level of children in China has continued to improve. In 2023, the national infant mortality rate and the mortality rate of children under 5 years old have decreased to 4.5 ‰ and 6.2 ‰, respectively. Compared with 2012, they have decreased by 56.3% and 53%, achieving the historical best level. Children's health is related to family happiness and the future of the nation. Shen Haiping pointed out that in ensuring children's health, the National Health Commission promotes the establishment of a working mechanism led by the Party Committee, led by the government, with multi departmental division of labor and cooperation, and the participation of the whole society. At the same time, incorporating the goals and tasks of children's health into the Healthy China strategy and the priority development areas of the China Children's Development Outline. In order to continuously improve the service system, the National Health Commission has improved the grassroots children's health service network, with district and county maternal and child health institutions as the leaders, township health centers and community health service centers as hubs, and village clinics as the foundation, to improve the accessibility of health services. At the same time, we will strengthen the improvement of pediatric capabilities in county-level hospitals, promote the linkage between grassroots medical and health institutions, maternal and child health institutions, children's hospitals, and comprehensive hospitals, promote the construction of a hierarchical diagnosis and treatment system for pediatrics, and promote the integration of high-quality children's medical resources from top to bottom. At present, there are 158 children's hospitals and 3082 maternal and child health institutions in China. The number of beds per thousand children nationwide has reached 2.7, an increase of 0.27 compared to 2015. The number of pediatricians in China has increased to 205800, an increase of 74.4% compared to 2015. In addition, the National Health Commission actively conducts pregnancy risk screening and assessment during pregnancy and childbirth, strengthens the referral and treatment of critically ill newborns, implements three-level prevention and control measures for birth defects, and provides health management services for children aged 0 to 6. At present, the national pre pregnancy examination rate is 96.5%, the prenatal screening rate is 91.3%, and the infant mortality rate and mortality rate of children under 5 years old caused by birth defects have decreased by more than 30% compared to 5 years ago.
