Türkiye's Intelligent Mine: "New Assassin" under the Sea

2024-06-18

Mines have the characteristics of good concealment, long operation period, low cost, and high power, and have gradually become an important weapon in maritime offensive and defensive operations since their inception. In recent years, with the development of technology, the intelligent trend of mines has become increasingly apparent. Recently, a company in Türkiye exhibited two types of intelligent mines - "Malaman" intelligent camouflage bottom mine and UCA air launched intelligent mine, which attracted the attention of the outside world. Malaman is a small intelligent sunken mine that can be deployed by submarines, warships, and aircraft. The mine is 1.8 meters long, 533 millimeters in diameter, weighs over 600 kilograms, has a combat depth of over 100 meters, and is charged with plastic bonded underwater explosives. It can be integrated with the seabed topography by replacing the shell, with strong concealment, suitable for long-term deployment underwater on important routes, as a strategic preset means. The UCA air launched intelligent mine is composed of MK-84 aviation bombs equipped with foldable wing glider components. The warhead integrates GPS positioning system, detonation device, and underwater acoustic identification system. The projectile uses radar absorbing materials and has certain stealth capabilities. UCA air launched intelligent mines are deployed by fighter jets with a maximum range of over 70 kilometers and can be deployed remotely outside the enemy's air defense firepower circle. Both intelligent mines adopt unique intelligent algorithms, integrate advanced sensors and remote communication technology, and can capture and analyze the underwater acoustic characteristics of past ships through high-precision sonar, identify and attack targets. In addition, they also have remote control capabilities, and operators can monitor the status of mines in real time, adjust task parameters remotely based on battlefield changes, or directly control attacks. This "person in the loop" design can effectively reduce the risk of accidental injury, especially the potential threat to civilian ships. In the future, these two intelligent mines can be secretly deployed underwater near enemy ports and important waterways to achieve covert combat purposes, which is of great significance for suppressing enemy maritime forces and protecting our own safety. Two smart mines in Türkiye are considered by western critics as "game rule changers" that are "the first in the world". However, considering the complexity of the underwater environment, the reliability of these two intelligent mines needs further testing. In addition, intelligent mines will also bring a series of international legal and ethical challenges. How to ensure its complete controllability and avoid accidental injury is also a problem that the R&D team needs to solve. (Lai Xin She)
