2024-06-18

After more than two months of archaeological excavation work, the true appearance of a large settlement site from the Guishuang Empire era, the Chenaltpei Site, has emerged in Chenar Village, Uzun District, Surhan River Oblast, southern Uzbekistan. This will fill the historical gap of this region during that period. The new discovery fills a historical gap and the Chenaltpe site was discovered by the China Uzbekistan Joint Archaeological Team in 2019. From April 2nd to June 8th this year, archaeologists from both countries conducted the first joint archaeological excavation here, and determined that the site is located on the edge of the platform on the east side of Chenar Village, with a distribution area of about 25000 square meters. The residential area in the central part of the site consists of the central main city and suburbs. There are No. I and No. II cemeteries on the terraces on both sides of the residential area, and 25 tombs have been excavated so far. The suburban area of the residential area has been excavated for 200 square meters, including the foundation built during the Guishuang Empire period. "When excavating the foundation of the wall, we found a rectangular ash pit with a large number of pottery net pendants unearthed, as well as typical pottery from the Guishuang period - double eared jars," Chen Xinru, an archaeologist at Northwest University of China who is working at the archaeological site, told reporters. Unearthed cultural relics from the Chenaltpe site in Uzbekistan. According to Tang Yunpeng's photo, there are obvious traces of life in the three houses discovered during the Guishuang period, and textiles and fishing tools have also been unearthed. Archaeologists believe that there were continuous residential traces on the east side of the Surhan River area during the Guishuang period, which was a key area for the distribution of Guishuang people. This discovery fills the historical gap in this area during that period. "This year's excavation results have revealed the characteristic of Guishuang residents' equal emphasis on agriculture and fishing, which is different from the Yue family's livelihood mainly based on animal husbandry." Tang Yunpeng, a lecturer at the Silk Road Archaeological Cooperation Research Center of Northwest University of China, who participated in archaeological work, said that the newly discovered plant seeds include wheat, rice, grapes, etc., further confirming that the Guishuang economy focuses on agriculture, supplemented by fishing and horticultural crops, which shows astonishing similarities with the contemporary economic model of Central Asia. Tang Yunpeng said that during the period of the Guishuang Empire corresponding to the Eastern Han Dynasty in China, several bamboo slips discovered in Gansu Province prove that the Guishuang side sent envoys along the Silk Road to Chang'an. Cultural relics unearthed from the Chenaltpei site. Tang Yunpeng provided pictures of the deep friendship between China and Ukraine. For many years, the joint archaeological team of China and Ukraine has jointly excavated the Samarkand Sazagan Site, Baisong Rabat Site, Uzunserhakat Site, and Qinaltpei Site in Ukraine. Long term joint field work and close academic exchanges have established a deep friendship between the team members of both sides. Archaeologists from China and Ukraine are conducting archaeological work at the Chenaltpe site in Uzbekistan. Tang Yunpeng provided a picture saying, "We are doing our best to provide assistance to the Chinese team members. For example, if the Chinese personnel are not well adapted to the local cuisine in Uzbekistan, we found tools such as electric rice cookers, steamed rice, and stir fried vegetables to let them taste the flavor of their hometown." Assistant researcher at the Samarkand Archaeological Research Institute in Uzbekistan, Alzyev, said. Working in the wilderness, clothes get dirty quickly, so we lend our washing machines to everyone to use. The field excavation work is relatively monotonous, and Ukrainian team members often organize football matches to liven up the work atmosphere. After fighting side by side time and time again, the tacit understanding between the team members has been constantly improved, and the hearts of both sides have also become closer. Through long-term close cooperation, China and Ukraine are constantly moving towards research goals. "Joint archaeology allows us to have a clearer understanding of how Eastern and Western civilizations communicate, and can also better restore the historical style of the ancient Silk Road," said Tang Yunpeng.
