Recently, Beijing has experienced continuous high temperatures. The emergency department of Tsinghua Changgeng Hospital in Beijing has seen an increase in the number of patients with sudden cerebral hemorrhage, newly diagnosed cerebral infarction, and enlarged old infarction, with an average of about 10 daily consultations. Psychiatrist Wei Chenming reminds that summer heat can easily damage the brain, and high-risk individuals such as the elderly and patients with cerebrovascular diseases should be particularly vigilant about stroke during hot weather. Yesterday morning, Mr. Liu, 70 years old, suddenly felt numb and powerless on the right side of his body and was sent to the emergency department of Tsinghua Changgeng Hospital for treatment. Wei Chenming, who received the diagnosis, diagnosed the patient with an acute "watershed" cerebral infarction, which occurs at the junction of the distribution areas of the two main arteries in the brain. Wei Chenming explained that this type of cerebral infarction is generally caused by insufficient cerebral blood circulation perfusion and ischemia in the watershed blood supply area. After inquiry, Mr. Liu already has an old problem of cerebral arteriosclerosis with stenosis. The weather is getting hot, and the elderly's appetite is decreasing. In recent days, they have eaten more raw and cold fruits to cool down, resulting in diarrhea. Anorexia and diarrhea caused Mr. Liu to experience dehydration, which in turn caused fluctuations in blood pressure and decreased cerebral perfusion. In addition, poor cerebrovascular conditions led to acute cerebral infarction. After symptomatic treatment, Mr. Liu's condition improved and his symptoms of weakness were alleviated. Currently still undergoing hospitalization and rehabilitation. Summer is not a high season for cerebrovascular diseases, but emergencies caused by heat often occur. Wei Chenming reminds that on hot days, high-risk individuals such as the elderly and patients with cerebrovascular diseases should pay extra attention to their brain health. After sweating heavily, it is important to replenish water in a timely manner; Avoid repeatedly entering and exiting air-conditioned rooms with low temperatures in hot environments; Pay attention to dietary hygiene and avoid dehydration caused by diarrhea; Pay attention to maintaining stable blood pressure. Patients with underlying diseases should take medication and follow up regularly to prevent recurrence and worsening of the condition. At the same time, key populations should always be vigilant about cerebrovascular emergencies, and if relevant symptoms occur, they should promptly seek medical attention at nearby stroke centers.
