Newly elected members voted to elect the President after electing the Speaker and Vice Speaker. After the vote counting ended, Chief Justice Jodo of South Africa, who presided over the meeting, announced that Ramaphosa received 283 votes and was elected as the President of South Africa based on the voting results. After his election, Ramaphosa delivered a speech stating that the South African people expect all political parties to work together within the constitutional framework to maintain social stability, address challenges such as poverty, inequality, and unemployment, establish a democratic society based on peace, justice, and free from racism and gender discrimination, and achieve universal prosperity. As the President of South Africa, he will be committed to achieving this goal. According to the South African Constitution, the President is elected by members of parliament and serves a term of 5 years. According to the plan, Ramaphosa will be sworn in on the 19th in the administrative capital of Pretoria. In the South African National Assembly elections held on May 29th, the ANC won 159 out of 400 seats, maintaining its position as the largest party in the National Assembly. Due to failing to secure more than half of the seats in the National Assembly, the ANC had to seek alliances with other political parties. South African Broadcasting Corporation reported on the 14th that the African National Assembly and the largest opposition party, the Democratic Alliance, have reached an agreement to form a government of national unity. Ramaphosa, currently 71 years old, was elected as the President of the African National Assembly in December 2017 and was re elected in December 2022. In February 2018, the then President of South Africa, Zuma, announced his resignation, and Vice President Ramaphosa became the new President of South Africa. In May 2019, the ANC led by Ramaphosa won the general election, and he was subsequently elected president. (Lai Xin She)
