Reporters learned from the PLA General Hospital on the 13th that Professor Zhang Xu, an academician of the CAS Member and director of the Department of Urology Medicine of the Third Medical Center of the PLA General Hospital (hereinafter referred to as "the Third Medical Center"), led the team to complete and demonstrate the first long-distance radical prostatectomy across Asia and Europe through a domestic remote surgical robot during the European laparoscopic and robotic surgery challenge conference in Rome, Italy. This marks that China has entered the forefront of remote surgery research in the world. It is understood that this is a long-distance, fully controlled remote robot surgery. This surgery was carried out simultaneously in Rome and Beijing, spanning a straight-line distance of nearly 8100 kilometers and a two-way communication distance of over 20000 kilometers, showcasing China's cutting-edge technology in urology and remote surgery to the world. During the surgery, Zhang Xu operated a domestically developed remote surgical robot in Rome. At the same time, in an operating room of the Third Medical Center in Beijing, a surgical robot that received remote information instructions accurately and flexibly executed the instructions, accurately performing surgery and removing the lesion for a prostate cancer patient. The entire surgery lasted for 65 minutes, and the team members cooperated harmoniously, ensuring the curative effect through meticulous operation. After the surgery, the remote robot's 3D high-definition images and data feedback showed clear anatomical layers during the operation, precise tumor control, and intact functional structures. Prior to this surgery, the Third Medical Center team made sufficient preoperative preparations through extensive organ simulation training and animal research, and conducted a full simulation surgical drill in a delayed environment from Rome to Beijing to ensure the stability and safety of the surgery. "This operation used the domestic robot system independently developed by China, combined with China's 5G+Internet dedicated line communication technology, gave full play to the advantages of low delay and high robustness of the remote surgery system, crossed many Asian and European countries, and truly realized the intercontinental remote surgery operation with low delay, high accuracy and high stability." After the surgery, Zhang Xu said that mature remote surgical technology has broken through the constraints of space on surgical implementation to the greatest extent possible. It is a systematic innovation brought about by the cross fusion of new technologies and concepts such as robotic surgery, remote communication, and artificial intelligence, and is also an important manifestation of the new quality productivity in the field of Chinese surgery.
