Cixi, Zhejiang: The Longyao Celadon Firing Technique that Continues for Thousands of Years

2024-06-07

From May 29th to June 6th, at the Shanglinhu Celadon Inheritance Park in Cixi City, Zhejiang Province, the traditional dragon kiln firing technique that had been cut off for thousands of years was replicated in a more than 20 meter long and 2-meter high antique dragon kiln. The theme of this event is "Millennium Kiln Fire Forest Creation". The Dragon Kiln was built along the mountain, modeled after the structure of the Yue Kiln in Shanglinhu during the Tang and Song dynasties. The shape of the kiln is elongated, resembling a dragon or snake from bottom to top. The kiln installation process follows the ancient method, placing each porcelain body in a bowl. In 16 kiln rooms, more than 3000 pieces of works from the inheritors of celadon firing techniques, masters of arts and crafts, celadon enterprises, teachers and students of celadon characteristic schools, and celadon enthusiasts in Cixi City are placed. The re firing process adopts the traditional wood fired dragon kiln firing method, which goes through two days and one night of high-temperature quenching and refining, striving to recreate the magnificent scenery of Yue kiln's "thousand peaks and emerald colors". Yue kiln is a well-known celadon kiln series in ancient China. During the Eastern Han Dynasty, porcelain was successfully fired in the Dragon Kiln of Yue Kiln. By the end of the Northern Song Dynasty and the beginning of the Southern Song Dynasty, Yue Kiln ceased firing. In the past 20 years, Cixi, Zhejiang has restored the craftsmanship of Yue kiln celadon firing, with the 30 kilometer long Yue kiln rural scenic road by Shanglin Lake as the main line, connecting Shanglin Lake Yue kiln National Archaeological Site Park, Shanglin Lake Yue kiln Museum, Celadon Culture Inheritance Park, Minghe Ancient Town and other cultural and tourism bases, striving to create a unique "secret colored porcelain" cultural and tourism route.
