Military and civilian search for unknown martyrs in Sheyang County, Jiangsu Province: 80 years later, the hero finally "returns"
2024-06-06
In midsummer, the grass and trees are lush. On the afternoon of May 21st, on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the sacrifice of 19 martyrs buried in the Haihe Revolutionary Martyrs Cemetery, members of the Martyrs Search Group in Sheyang County, Jiangsu Province, accompanied by the instructions of the people of Sheyang, came to a Red Army Brigade of the 83rd Group Army of the Army to "bravely charge and kill the company" and escort the martyrs back to their unit. In the honor room of the company, a special exhibition area for photos and historical materials of the "Haihe Battle" was opened for 19 martyrs. Everyone was full of respect and revisited the heroic deeds of the 19 martyrs. On June 30, 1944, at dawn, in order to cover the transfer of the main force, a platoon of more than 30 people from a certain unit of the New Fourth Army ambushed an enemy motorboat in Tuogang Village, Haihe Town, killing more than 40 Japanese and puppet soldiers, but also paying a huge price. The next day, with tears in their eyes, the local villagers collectively buried the bodies of the 18 martyrs found. In memory of the martyrs of the New Fourth Army who sacrificed their lives, in 1959, the relevant departments renamed Tuogang Village as the Martyrs Brigade, which is now known as the Martyrs Village. In 1967, the People's Government of Sheyang County established the "Eighteen Martyrs Cemetery" at the site of the martyrs' sacrifice. Later, another martyr's body, also sacrificed in this battle, was found and buried next to the "Eighteen Martyrs Cemetery", but it is still commonly referred to as the "Eighteen Martyrs Cemetery". In 2006, the local government expanded the "Eighteen Martyrs Cemetery" into the Haihe Revolutionary Martyrs Cemetery. Due to the tense war situation and the troops engaging in other battles, the names of the 19 martyrs were not recorded in time, leaving only simple information about the "Eighteen Martyrs of the Pi Brigade". "Helping martyrs find their loved ones is the best consolation for the heroic spirit in heaven." In March 2023, a martyr search group was established in Sheyang County, consisting of the County People's Armed Forces Department, County Party Committee Propaganda Department, County Veterans Affairs Bureau, County Integrated Media Center, and other units. Yan Qianlong, Political Commissar of the People's Armed Forces Department of Sheyang County, led a family search team to visit the "Huayuantou" Party Branch and Martyrs Village in Haihe to search for clues related to the unknown martyrs. The former militia commander of Martyrs Village, 91 year old Wang Hengyi, was the only person found by the family search team. Wang Lao recalled that the night before the battle, a squad moved into his house. He only remembered that the soldiers spoke Shandong dialect, and couldn't remember anything else. On March 6th, a member of the family search group contacted Peng Chenyang, a descendant of the New Fourth Army who had been paying attention to the local revolutionary history and an old journalist from Sheyang County. His hometown was near the site of the "Port Collapse Ambush". Peng Chenyang vividly remembers that his father once said that among the people who buried the bodies of martyrs at that time, there was a militia battle hero named Lu Yueheng. Lu Yueheng had culture and good water skills. On the day of burying the martyrs, he even jumped into the Haihe River to retrieve a Japanese Japanese rifle, which was later handed over to the New Fourth Army. However, Lu Yueheng had already passed away. Yan Qianlong invited Peng Chenyang to join the family search group and asked him to provide more clues. With the help of Peng Chenyang, they found Lu Jicheng, the 85 year old daughter of Lu Yueheng, in Yancheng. At her home, everyone saw a handwritten memoir left by Lu Yueheng in the 1980s about salvaging Japanese Japanese rifle. Lu Jicheng said that finding the old unit of the "Eighteen Martyrs" was also her father's last wish. She rummaged through boxes and cabinets, but still couldn't find any clues related to the "Eighteen Martyrs". At this moment, she suddenly remembered her father's long cherished "Historical Materials of the Sheyang Revolution", which vaguely remembered the record of the "Eighteen Martyrs". This book had already been collected by her younger brother many years ago. The family search team drove non-stop to Lu Jicheng's younger brother's house and saw this precious document. There was an article called "The Ambush Battle of Port Collapse", which recorded the battlefield report published in the Yanfu Dazhong Daily, a newspaper of the Yancheng District Committee, just a few days after the battle occurred. Among them were not only the detailed deeds of the 18th martyr who shed blood on Port Collapse, but also the unit number at that time - the 20th Regiment, 3rd Battalion, 10th Company of the 7th Brigade, 3rd Division of the New Fourth Army, as well as the names of three martyrs - Shi Fangzhuang, Xu Panyou, and Sun Longxiang. Upon seeing this precious information, the family search team was greatly inspired and made breakthrough progress in the search for the families of 19 martyrs. On March 14th, the family search team arrived at Peng Chenyang's house and carefully compared the information found by Peng Chenyang and the search team with the "Sheyang County Annals" and the information from the Sheyang County Party History Office, confirming the authenticity of the information. According to the current clues, Yan Qianlong and others contacted through various channels and ultimately found the unit where the 19 martyrs lived. Martyrs hope to return to their troops, and the troops are looking for heroes. On March 30th, Zhang Bin, the 36th instructor of the Heroic Assault Company, and other representatives of the troops, rushed to Sheyang to verify information, examine physical objects, and verify historical facts. After repeated comparisons, it was finally confirmed that the unit numbers, combat time, location, and number of people engaged in combat on both sides of the Haihe Battle were completely consistent with the brigade history records. On the eve of the Qingming Festival, the People's Armed Forces Department of Sheyang County and the People's Government of Haihe Town held a grand memorial ceremony at the Haihe Revolutionary Martyrs Cemetery. Upon learning that the 19 martyrs who have sacrificed for 80 years have returned to their posts, hundreds of villagers rushed to offer flowers to the martyrs along with representatives of military officers and soldiers. "The spirit of 19 martyrs sacrificing their lives to defend their country is a vivid portrayal of our soul." Soldier Hu Weilong said passionately, "We must inherit this fighting spirit and write a new chapter of striving and strengthening the military in the new era!" (Xinhua News Agency)
