World Meteorological Organization: There is a high probability that global temperature increases will exceed 1.5 degrees Celsius in the next five years

2024-06-06

The World Meteorological Organization released a report on the 5th stating that in the next five years, there is an 80% chance that the global average temperature will be 1.5 degrees Celsius higher than pre industrial levels (1850-1900) for at least one year. The organization stated that this is a serious warning that global temperature increases are approaching the ideal temperature control targets set by the Paris Agreement. This report, titled "Global Interannual to Decadal Climate Recent Report (2024-2028)," shows that since 2015, there has been a continuous increase in the likelihood of a global average temperature increase of more than 1.5 degrees Celsius from pre industrial levels for at least one year in every five-year period, with the probability approaching zero from 2015 to 2019. The report states that from 2024 to 2028, the global average near surface temperature is expected to be 1.1 to 1.9 degrees Celsius higher than pre industrial levels each year, with an 86% chance of exceeding 2023 as the hottest year for at least one year during this period. The European Union's climate monitoring agency, the Copernicus Climate Change Service, also released a report on the 5th, stating that the world has just experienced the hottest May on record, and the average monthly temperature has reached the highest level in the same period for 12 consecutive months. Data shows that in May this year, the global average temperature was 1.52 degrees Celsius higher than pre industrial levels. The global average temperature in the past 12 months has reached a record high, 1.63 degrees Celsius higher than pre industrial levels. The Paris Agreement proposes that by the end of this century, the increase in global average temperature compared to pre industrial levels should be controlled within 2 degrees Celsius, and efforts should be made to control warming within 1.5 degrees Celsius. UN Secretary General Guterres said in a speech in New York on the 5th that the necessity for action is unprecedented, but the opportunity is also unprecedented - not only to achieve climate goals, but also to achieve economic prosperity and sustainable development. The Deputy Secretary General of the World Meteorological Organization, Ko Barrett, called for the urgent need for the world to take more measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, otherwise the cost will be increasingly heavy. But Barrett also emphasized that temporarily breaking through 1.5 degrees Celsius does not mean that the ideal temperature control target set by the Paris Agreement cannot be achieved, which refers to the control of long-term warming spanning several decades.
