How Art Colleges Respond to the Transformation of Artificial Intelligence
2024-06-05
In recent years, artificial intelligence generated content has been sweeping towards us. Every major technological advancement will inevitably trigger changes in production relations, thereby driving profound changes in the economy and society. On the one hand, with the continuous iteration and breakthrough of technologies such as big data, cloud computing, and deep learning, the wave of artificial intelligence is rapidly sweeping across various fields of society with the momentum of "starting a prairie fire" and giving birth to a large number of new industries, new formats, and new models. The prelude to a transformation is quietly unfolding. On the other hand, the accelerated evolution of a new round of technological revolution and industrial transformation is bound to breed huge new quality productive forces. How to cultivate and develop a future oriented art industry and actively shape new driving forces for art development is an urgent need to promote the acceleration of art development and the prosperity of cultural and artistic undertakings. For art schools, generative artificial intelligence reshapes not only the form and content of education and art, but also the entire system and development ecology related to art and education at a deeper level. Therefore, art schools face a major issue of the times: how to respond to the revolutionary changes brought about by artificial intelligence? Firstly, artificial intelligence has expanded new spaces in art, and innovative art theories have become a call of the times. Generative artificial intelligence has shown special potential in empowering traditional creations such as script writing, painting, stage design, and track editing due to its enormous advantages in text writing, image generation, and music production. With the rapid development of technologies such as metaverse and virtual reality, traditional stage forms are no longer the only carriers of activities such as drama, dance, and exhibitions. The creation of virtual spaces brings people a more diverse and vivid immersive artistic experience. With the help of artificial intelligence repair technology, art can be regenerated, and artistic creation has made new breakthroughs. Art has gained more possibilities in the AI era. Under the empowerment of artificial intelligence, new ways and paths of artistic creation and expression will inevitably give birth to a new art ecology, because all art is comprehensive, and drama is even more so. It will involve many aspects such as creative composition, physical form, costume and art, sound and light, and artificial intelligence can be integrated into various links to achieve dramatic changes and sudden innovations in artistic modes. In the past, art and technology went hand in hand in different directions, but now artificial intelligence has achieved a fusion and leap of the two. While changing the mode of art production, it is also reconstructing the aesthetic perception system, which has a profound impact on art theory, art disciplines, and art education. The innovative integration of art and technology has become an important path for future art development, and is also one of the key areas that cannot be avoided in future discipline construction and academic research. Whether it is collaborative innovation through interdisciplinary groups, practical exploration through cross disciplinary integration, or the construction of an independent theoretical system in art, it is necessary to face the promoting role of artificial intelligence in many key fields. The comprehensive intervention of technology in art brings revolutionary changes to art. Art schools cannot remain indifferent to this, and must conduct forward-looking explorations in the integration of science and art, the construction of disciplinary platforms, cross-border cross integration, and professional talent cultivation, consciously constructing a future oriented art discipline, academic, and discourse system. Secondly, to cultivate a new ecosystem in the AI era, art schools need to build a new pattern of disciplines and majors that are oriented towards the future. Taking the drama education that I am familiar with as an example, I can construct the future of drama within the scope of the first level discipline of art. It is undeniable that the art of drama has been revitalized by technology, and people's concept of drama has quietly been changed by new formats, new technologies, and new fields. On the basis of the traditional "retrospective" research of historical criticism, drama studies need to explore future oriented innovative fusion and forward-looking exploration of "prospective" research. As an important battlefield for scientific research, universities should and must shoulder the mission and responsibility of theoretical construction. Based on this, it is necessary to propose the major proposition of "Future Drama Studies", aiming to explore the form of future drama, the creative methods of future drama, the relationship between the creation, performance, and observation of future drama, the future expression of traditional drama, and the challenges, changes, and responses faced by higher education in drama, and conduct a series of forward-looking research that combines "grounding" and originality. Of course, such disciplinary construction should be an open and dynamic process, rather than a one-time and permanent one. In addition, technological empowerment requires the improvement of the intelligence level of traditional advantageous majors, achieving "keeping up with the times". This can not only add the atmosphere of the intelligent era to ancient theatrical art, but also give it more imaginative creative space, which is of great significance. At present, artificial intelligence has become a major (direction) and research field that major universities are eager to add. Many art schools have also begun to set up research directions such as art cross-border creation, artificial intelligence image creation, and artificial intelligence performance design during their graduate studies. Many universities have also timely optimized and adjusted their professional courses, exploring the possibility of setting up majors during the undergraduate stage. Undoubtedly, it is currently the window period for artificial intelligence art education. Thirdly, education and teaching in art colleges need to address various opportunities and challenges brought about by the era of artificial intelligence. Under the conditions of technological empowerment, knowledge acquisition will become more convenient and diverse. The popularization of generative artificial intelligence also enables art practitioners to easily write various scripts, plans, papers, and even drawings, video generation, etc. The future form of traditional theatrical art is constantly being updated and interpreted. While seizing opportunities, we should also proactively consider which aspects of literacy and abilities universities should focus on cultivating students in the future? The shaping of values is not only indispensable, but also primary. No matter how technology changes, it cannot replace the position and role of teachers in cultivating student values. Especially in the intelligent society, the speed and scope of information dissemination have reached an unprecedented level, with various erroneous statements, viewpoints, and negative values flooding it. Establishing correct values has become even more important. The cultivation of innovative consciousness and creative ability is its fundamental content. At present, generative artificial intelligence brings convenience and efficiency to the production process of artistic creation, and the source of creativity still lies in "people". There are technological or algorithmic factors that affect the quality of artificial intelligence output, but fundamentally it is still people's creativity. The poetic and imaginative creativity of artistic creation becomes increasingly precious. Art colleges should strengthen general education in humanities and technology, broaden the cognitive perspective of art students, cultivate interdisciplinary thinking, and mutually stimulate and enhance innovation and creativity. The reconstruction of perception and ability in human-computer interaction is an important content. Emerging professions such as prompt engineers have emerged abroad, unlocking the potential of AI through contextual guidance and cultivating the ability to collaborate with humans. In the new creative context formed by the interweaving of various technologies, understanding the human-machine interaction mode, exploring the application scenarios of human-machine collaboration, and reshaping the artistic sensory experience in the new realm may be the new requirements for artistic creation in the intelligent society.
