Centennial Xiang Embroidery Returns to Its Homeland
2024-06-04
"This Xiang embroidery has accompanied several generations of our family for nearly a hundred years..." Not long ago, when she learned that the Hunan Revolutionary Military Museum, which was under construction, was collecting cultural relics, Ms. Luo Yu, who was far away in Beijing, immediately contacted the cultural relics collection staff in Xiangtan City, Hunan Province, and voluntarily donated a piece of Xiang embroidery left by her grandfather, Martyr Luo Yinong. Ms. Luo Yu presented this Hunan embroidery work to everyone, and saw a tall and powerful lion standing on a boulder, with a bright and lively gaze, thick and powerful limbs, and a golden mane resembling a crown, lifelike. "This Hunan embroidery is too precious. Please rest assured that we will take good care of it, use it well, and promote it well, so that more people can understand its story!" Li Yunhua, a staff member of the People's Armed Forces Department of Xiangtan County who came to Beijing to receive cultural relics, said solemnly. Luo Yinong is a native of Xiangtan, Hunan. He was one of the early important leaders of the Party, an outstanding proletarian revolutionary, and a famous leader of the workers' movement. In 1927, the "4.12" counter revolutionary coup broke out, and Luo Yinong was ordered to withdraw from Shanghai. He successively served as the Secretary of the Jiangxi Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China and the Secretary of the Hubei Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China. At a conference in Hubei, Luo Yinong's passionate speech greatly inspired a female comrade, who was Li Wenyi, Luo Yinong's third wife and then the Minister of Women's Association Organization. In September 1927, Luo Yinong was appointed as the Minister of the Organization Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and went to work in Shanghai. At that time, the white terror shrouded, and Luo Yinong and Li Wenyi disguised themselves as husband and wife to carry out underground activities. During this period, Luo Yinong often held secret meetings under the guise of inviting friends to play cards, while Li Wenyi disguised herself as the hostess and secretly kept watch. They also used purchasing daily necessities as a cover to transmit information, and this Xiang embroidery was purchased during this period. Living together day and night, the two of them developed feelings for each other. On New Year's Day in 1928, Luo Yinong and Li Wenyi got married under the witness of their comrades. On April 15, 1928, Luo Yinong was arrested and imprisoned for betrayal by a traitor. Faced with the enemy's severe torture, he remained steadfast and unyielding. Six days later, he bravely died in Longhua, Shanghai. Before his execution, Luo Yinong wrote a letter expressing his love and expectations for his wife: "Zhe Shi (Li Wenyi's original name), bid farewell forever, Lingqi knows, and will forever embrace you. I hope you learn what I have learned to comfort me." After Luo Yinong's sacrifice, Li Wenyi turned his grief into strength and continued to devote himself to the revolutionary cause. After the establishment of the People's Republic of China, she successively served as a member of the Standing Committee of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and the Vice Chairman of the 5th National Women's Federation. During this time, although she went through many twists and turns, she always regarded the Xiang embroidery of "The Lion Standing on the Stone" as a treasure and kept it by her side. The only son of martyr Luo Yinong, Luo Northwest, was sent to Yan'an by his grandmother at the age of 12 and later went abroad to study. After returning to China in 1954, Li Wenyi and Luo Xibei, the "mother and son", finally recognized each other through the mediation of the then Deputy Minister of the Organization Department, Shuai Mengqi. There is no blood relationship between them, but Li Wenyi regards Luo Northwest as his own and often tells Luo Northwest about the years when he and Luo Yinong fought side by side, and gives him this Xiang embroidery as a gift. For decades afterwards, this Hunan embroidery painting remained hanging on the wall of Luo Xibei's home, like a silent lighthouse, guiding Luo Northwest to follow his father's footsteps. He has participated in the survey, design, and construction of hydropower projects such as Longxi River, Dahong River, and Liujiaxia. In 1985, he won the first prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award and became a famous hydropower expert in China. In November 2005, Luo Northwest passed away at the age of 79. Cultural relics are silent, history speaks. Ms. Luo Yu said passionately, "This Hunan embroidery comes from Hunan, and now it has returned to its hometown. Continuing to unleash its light and heat is an excellent destination!" (Liao Xinshe)
