2024-06-03
Dunhuang is located on the northwest border of China and is an important node on the Silk Road. This ancient city has been a shining pearl of the fusion of Eastern and Western cultures since ancient times. Looking back at the long river of history, travelers, merchants, and monks from different countries and ethnicities embarked on a magnificent journey along the ancient Silk Road. They exchanged ideas, spread culture, engaged in business and trade, and exchanged ideas... These sparks of cultural integration have portrayed fascinating stories and unique cultural treasures of Dunhuang on this land, becoming important witnesses of the profound cultural heritage of China and the exchange and mutual learning of world civilizations. In 138 BC, along with Zhang Qian's westward journey, Dunhuang, a precious and unique cultural relic, stepped onto the historical stage. Since 366 AD, the Mogao Grottoes of Dunhuang have been built for thousands of years. In 1900, more than 50000 precious Dunhuang posthumous books and cultural relics were found in the Sutra Collection Cave of the Mogao Grottoes of Dunhuang. The number and variety of them are amazing. These precious cultural relics, including well preserved scriptures, historical documents, vivid paintings, and exquisite silk paintings, cover multiple fields such as religion, history, geography, language, literature, and art. Dunhuang is therefore known as the "Encyclopedia of the Middle Ages" and the "Ocean of Ancient Learning". There are 735 caves in the Mogao Grottoes of Dunhuang, 492 of which have painted sculptures and murals. 45000 square meters of murals and over 2000 colored sculptures, with a history of over 1600 years, they witness and record the integration of Chinese and Western cultures on the Silk Road. For over a century, scholars both domestically and internationally have conducted in-depth and systematic research on these precious cultural relics, uncovering many mysteries about ancient Chinese history. To a large extent, these studies have also "rewritten" the history of ancient China, giving us a more comprehensive and in-depth understanding of that era. The rich connotation and precious value of the Dunhuang Grottoes and the Dunhuang documents have not only attracted great attention from Chinese scholars, but also attracted many scholars from many countries around the world to devote themselves to its research, thus forming an international outstanding science - Dunhuang Studies in this century. The Mogao Grottoes of Dunhuang, an all embracing world art treasure house, is a world-class art treasure house with thousands of years of history, rich content and huge quantity. It combines murals, statues, cave architecture and other art categories, which makes people fascinated and amazed. Its artistic form not only inherits the local Han Jin art tradition, absorbs the styles of the Southern and Northern Dynasties and Tang Song art schools, but also continuously accepts, transforms, and integrates the art styles of India, Central Asia, and West Asia outside the region, showcasing a history of Buddhist art and its gradual process of sinicization to people. Especially the exquisite murals preserved in Dunhuang Grottoes have a history of thousands of years, including figure paintings, landscape paintings, animal paintings, and decorative pattern paintings. They are numerous and form their own systems, each of which can become an independent history of character painting, landscape painting, animal painting, and decorative pattern painting. They are important visual materials for studying the history of ancient Chinese art, aesthetics, production, and many aspects of life. In the rich and colorful murals, we can appreciate the interweaving of music and dance, the solemnity of Buddha and Bodhisattva statues, as well as the delicacy of clothing and exquisite decorative patterns for worshippers. Among them, "Dunhuang Feitian", "Rebound Pipa", "Thousand Handed Guanyin", "Offering Bodhisattva", "Lotus Boy", and "Hu Xuan Wu Ji" have become classic artistic images widely circulated both domestically and internationally. In addition, the records of art and daily life in the Mogao Caves also emit intoxicating vitality with their unique charm and profound cultural connotations, providing important information for future generations to study ancient China and shining new brilliance in the creation of modern art. In fact, whether it is artists, literary workers, music and dance workers, or even architects, calligraphers, or medical practitioners, they can draw nourishment from the rich cultural heritage of Dunhuang and create new achievements. Through the Silk Road, the culture and art of the four ancient civilizations of the ancient world collided, blended, and absorbed each other, condensing into a brilliant crystallization of ancient China's exchange with the world. These dialogues among civilizations are built on mutual respect, inclusiveness, and understanding, drawing on each other and constantly innovating, jointly promoting the progress of human civilization. The profound mystery and broad mind of Dunhuang culture make it a common memory of human civilization exchanges and mutual learning, and provide a profound historical background and cultural support for the "the Belt and Road" initiative. Nowadays, as a cultural bridge connecting China and the world, Dunhuang culture has become the best foundation for telling the story of China to the world. Dunhuang contains rich historical resources and cultural essence, providing valuable opportunities for countries around the world to understand and understand China. With the power of Dunhuang culture, China's long history, splendid culture, and unique charm have also entered a broader world stage. (Lai Xin She)
