Writer Hu Jifeng: How to make children feel the power of stories?
2024-05-31
"Literature has a great impact on children, so children's literature writers should strive to create better works." Speaking of the topic of writing, children's literature writer Hu Jifeng said. Recently, Hu Jifeng's work "Dad on the Clouds" has been officially published. This is a military themed children's novel that unfolds from the perspective of a twelve year old boy. The book revolves around the protagonist's longing for his sacrificed father and his desire to meet him, creating a group of distinctive character images. Hu Jifeng had a dream of becoming a soldier since he was young. Although it was not realized, his love and longing for the military camp have never changed. After becoming a writer, he really wanted to write a book that told children about the mission and responsibility of Chinese soldiers, and presented the love, respect, and support of the people for their children's soldiers. Regarding the creation of novels, Hu Jifeng said that he strongly agrees with a viewpoint of critic Hai Fei, which is that novels not only require good stories, but also good storytelling methods - especially for novels read for children. "Due to the special age and mental state of children, it is required that the novels written for them should be better looking." He said that he has always been concerned about the suspense and "buttons" in novels. "My writing process is often a process of letting children guess puzzles." It is not easy to achieve this. If the puzzles are too difficult or too easy, children may choose to give up. "The mystery created by the author should be of moderate difficulty, attracting children to continue guessing until they discover the truth of the story and also feel the power of the story," he said. However, in "Dad on the Clouds", Hu Jifeng takes the opposite approach, explaining the "answer" from the beginning, letting the boy know the truth, and then leading the readers to "deduce" to attract young readers to continue reading. A good children's novel must have a clear context and clues. I set up a main storyline and several auxiliary lines in the story. All clues are like a web, making the story closer and easier to read He said. Hu Jifeng also pays close attention to the influence of literature on children in his daily life. He made an analogy: if wheat, rice, vegetables, fruits, poultry and eggs... are essential material foods for children's physical development, then literature is an essential "spiritual food" to ensure the development of children's thoughts, emotions, and character. "For children, literature plays an extremely important role." Hu Jifeng believes that "children's literature writers should strive to create better works and consciously take on the responsibility and mission of using literature to nourish the heart and culture as a person."
