My scientist has completed the world's first pig to human xenograft liver transplantation
2024-05-27
On May 24th, it was learned from the First Affiliated Hospital of Anhui Medical University that Professor Sun Beicheng's team, in collaboration with Professor Wei Hongjiang's team from Yunnan Agricultural University, successfully completed the world's first live human xenograft liver transplantation surgery, transplanting genetically modified pig liver to a critically ill liver cancer patient. This marks a significant breakthrough for Chinese scientists in the field of related medicine. In the past two years, significant progress has been made in the technology of multi gene edited pig xenograft transplantation in the United States, which has achieved live pig to human transplantation of 2 hearts and 2 kidneys, bringing hope for the development of pig to human xenograft transplantation. However, due to the multiple important functions of the liver such as metabolism, immunity, hematopoiesis, and coagulation, American scholars have not ventured into pig to human xenograft liver transplantation. It is reported that the patient is a 71 year old patient with huge liver cancer in the right lobe. On May 17th, in the event that intervention and other treatments were ineffective and rupture could occur at any time, the team, with full consent from family members and patients, transplanted a 514-gram 10 gene edited pig (i.e. 10 gene edited pig) liver into the patient's right liver socket. The liver source comes from the Key Laboratory of Gene Editing and Xenotransplantation of Small Pigs in Yunnan Province, Yunnan Agricultural University. The surgical process was smooth, and the transplanted pig liver immediately secreted bile. As of May 24th, which is the 7th day after surgery, the patient is in good condition and can move freely on the ground. Liver function has returned to normal. Sun Beicheng revealed that currently, transplanted pig liver can secrete about 200 milliliters of golden bile per day, CT and ultrasound confirmed that the blood flow in the hepatic artery, portal vein, and hepatic vein of the transplanted pig liver was completely normal. It is understood that this is the fifth live human xenograft surgery in the world, and is considered another milestone in the clinical application of pig to human xenograft worldwide. Sun Beicheng introduced that the success of this surgery has created multiple miracles in medical history, including the development of global standards on how to implant whole pig liver, the use of immunosuppressants, and perioperative management of xenograft liver transplantation, making it possible for xenograft pig liver transplantation to enter clinical practice.
