Yungang Grottoes "Enter" Shanxi University Teachers and Students Perceive Cultural Heritage Protection

The Yungang Grottoes in the Library - Yungang Classic Art and Literature Exhibition was recently held at Shanxi University, showcasing 3D replica exhibits of Yungang Grottoes and Yungang classic literature. The 3D printed seventh standing Buddha on the fourth floor of the south wall of the back chamber of Cave 13 in Yungang Grottoes. One of the exhibits in this exhibition is a 3D printed replica of the Buddha's head in the 20th cave of Yungang Grottoes, which is one-sixth the size. The replica is based on millimeter level precision 3D data printing and production. The material is biodegradable PLA resin, and the surface is sprayed with sandstone texture spray paint to maximize the restoration of real cultural relics information, achieving the movable display of immovable cultural relics. According to Hang Kan, the director of Yungang Research Institute, the protection of Yungang Grottoes cannot be achieved without digitization, and the current surveying and mapping technology has reached an accuracy of 0.5 millimeters. The central tower pillar of Cave 6 of Yungang Grottoes is the most complex part of carving, and now Yungang Research Institute is working together with Wuhan University to overcome this 3D printing technology challenge. The remains of Xili Buddha in Cave 20 of Yungang Grottoes exhibited at the exhibition site. This exhibition also showcases Western elements in the statues of Yungang Grottoes in the form of graphics and text. It is understood that the Yungang Grottoes combine architecture, sculpture, and decorative art in their artistic expression. On the basis of traditional Chinese culture, they are also influenced by foreign cultures such as Greece and Persia. Through continuous innovation, evolution, and integration, they have become a model of cave art in the 5th century AD. This exhibition also incorporates learning activities such as inheritance and exploration, calligraphy copying, and mural replication, allowing students to not only understand cultural heritage but also deeply experience the charm of traditional Chinese culture, and encouraging more teachers and students to participate in the inheritance and protection of cultural heritage.
