Further acceleration of the Yinggao supersonic missile project

2024-05-22

According to the Daily Telegraph, the UK plans to install domestically produced hypersonic missiles before 2030, following a significant increase in defense spending and the announcement of a "wartime state" in its defense industry. According to a statement released by the Defence Equipment and Support Agency of the UK Ministry of Defence, the UK Ministry of Defence has signed agreements with dozens of companies to allow them to participate in the bidding for the development of the UK's first hypersonic missile project. It is reported that the UK Ministry of Defense has not separately entrusted the research and development of this project to a specific service, but has specifically organized and implemented it by the Ministry of Defense to fully promote the project to be completed on schedule. In addition, due to the early stages of the hypersonic missile project, the UK Department of Defense only proposed performance indicators for speeds exceeding Mach 5, and the missile launch platform has not yet been clearly defined. In fact, the UK started researching hypersonic missiles earlier. In the 1980s, Britain proposed the "Hotor" spaceplane program and the "Skytower" program related to hypersonic missiles. In 2006, BAE Systems participated in the hypersonic international flight research test program. In 2020, the Defense Science and Technology Laboratory and the US Air Force Research Laboratory under the UK Department of Defense passed a program called "Thresher" to test hypersonic weapons. In 2021, the UK Department of Defense announced a £ 6.6 billion (approximately $8.3 billion) investment in the development of new concept weapon systems such as hypersonic missiles and laser weapons. At the end of 2023, the UK Department of Defense launched the "Framework Agreement for Hypersonic Technology and Capability Development", attracting more than 90 companies and research institutions to design hypersonic missile solutions. The UK claims that pursuing hypersonic technology is to address current and future threats, but the outside world believes that the UK is not willing to fall behind in the hypersonic missile development competition. In recent years, hypersonic weapons have developed rapidly, and many countries have achieved breakthrough results. Russia had already deployed the Dagger hypersonic missile in its military as early as 2017, and subsequently deployed the Pioneer and Zircon hypersonic missiles. France successfully completed the first flight test of the V-MaX hypersonic missile project in 2023. At the same time, France has also launched a research and development program called "Nuclear Armed Hypersonic Air Launched Cruise Missile" to develop a scramjet hypersonic cruise missile, further enhancing France's initiative in the field of hypersonic weapons. At present, the UK Ministry of Defense has clearly stated that hypersonic missiles will be independently developed and assembled in the UK, but the project faces many problems. In recent years, the domestic demand for weapons and equipment in the UK has continued to weaken, leading to a continuous decline in the market share of weapons exports and a gradual decline in defense industry capabilities. Meanwhile, Brexit has led to restrictions on defense cooperation and technology sharing between the UK and the EU. Establishing a complete hypersonic weapons and equipment industry chain on its own is a daunting task for the UK. Analysts believe that real-life issues may lead to the UK adopting an outsourcing approach for hypersonic missiles. Hypersonic weapons are an important component of the so-called "second pillar" in the American, British, and Australian "Okus" alliance. In 2022, the governments of the United Kingdom, the United States, and Australia issued a joint statement announcing their cooperation in the field of hypersonic weapons. Currently, the US Army and Navy
