The Jiangmen Overseas Chinese Hometown Searching for Roots and the Cantonese Film
2024-05-15
"The filming was great. It turns out that there were so many stories of Taishan people going abroad and struggling in the past, and I have gained a deeper understanding of the overseas Chinese culture in my hometown." After watching the movie "Dreaming in the Hometown", Li Yingyi, a young Taishan native and a student at San Francisco City College, sighed. Recently, the San Francisco City College and the San Francisco Public Library jointly held a film viewing and exchange conference on "Dream of the Hometown", which aims to enhance people's understanding of the history and culture of overseas Chinese through the art form of film. "Dreaming in the Homeland" is the first original overseas Chinese themed film in Jiangmen, released in October 2023, with Cantonese as the dialogue language. The film tells the story of an old overseas Chinese returning to his hometown with his grandson to search for roots. It not only showcases the hundred year history of overseas Chinese, but also showcases the rich folk culture of the hometown, including national intangible cultural heritage projects, Guangdong music, and specialty cuisine, presenting a colorful cultural scroll to the audience. At the event, the audience focused on watching the movie, deeply attracted by its vivid storyline and profound cultural connotations. After the screening, the organizers interacted with the audience, and many Taishan villagers expressed that through this movie, they have a deeper understanding of the attachment of overseas Chinese to their hometown and the persistence of cultural inheritance. Professor Curt Sanford from San Francisco City College said, "We are delighted to hold this film viewing and exchange event. The film will discover many interesting places in Mount Tai, and there are many overseas Chinese in San Francisco. We hope that through such an event, more people can understand the history and culture of overseas Chinese, and further promote the exchange of Chinese and Western cultures." At the sharing event, Anna Eng, a professor specializing in Asian immigrant history at San Francisco State University and the University of California, Berkeley, also shared her family's immigration stories. She hopes that through such an event, more people's spiritual and cultural lives will be enriched, and understanding and respect for different cultures will be enhanced. "The main audience of the film is overseas Chinese, and we hope to resonate with everyone through the film, so that more people can understand their roots and the immigration history of their ancestors." Director Li Weinian said that the film received funding and support from many Chinese and overseas Chinese during the filming process. In the future, we will continue to shoot overseas Chinese themed films, tell stories of overseas Chinese, and inherit and promote Chinese culture. It is understood that the movie "Dreaming in the Hometown" has appeared at multiple film festivals both domestically and internationally, and has been permanently collected by the Chinese Overseas Chinese History Museum, receiving widespread attention and praise from overseas Chinese at home and abroad. This event is an important step for the film to spread Chinese culture and tell Chinese stories overseas, which will further expand its influence and enable more people to understand Chinese culture.
