Artificial intelligence helps revitalize the millennium old pagoda
2024-05-10
The Yingxian Wooden Pagoda was built in 1056 AD and is the tallest and oldest pure wooden structure tower style building in the world. It is known as the "epic" of China's wooden structure and is also called a "unique and great work" by Liang Sicheng. However, now it also faces the challenge of how to protect and inherit. Due to the gradual accumulation of damage caused by factors such as earthquakes, wind and rain, and wars over thousands of years, the Yingxian Wooden Pagoda is no longer available for tourists to climb and visit. This is the dilemma of a tower and also a challenge faced by many cultural heritage sites. AI technology provides a new path to solving this problem. In February 2023, the School of Architecture at Tsinghua University held an academic seminar on "Digital Transformation of Ancient Architecture Protection and Metaverse Construction Research" based on previous research results. The meeting focused on the digital protection of the Yingxian Wooden Pagoda in Shanxi, and delved into the feasibility of protecting cultural heritage in the new era. At the meeting, Lenovo Group and the School of Architecture at Tsinghua University jointly launched the "New IT, New Cultural Heritage: AI Empowering Smart Yingxian Wooden Pagoda" project. According to the division of labor, the School of Architecture at Tsinghua University fully leverages its research advantages, carries out modeling work on the internal structure of wooden towers, and creates a database of wooden tower parameters; Translate work results into display and popular science content for wooden towers, and create virtual experience scripts. Lenovo Group leverages its technological innovation advantages, combining artificial intelligence, neural radiation fields, and augmented reality technology to build a "twin" in the digital world for Yingxian Wooden Pagoda. In terms of cultural heritage revitalization and utilization, the "Wisdom Yingxian Wooden Pagoda" has achieved three major breakthroughs: simulated tower climbing, artistic restoration, and integration of ancient and modern. With the suspension of tower climbing visits in the scenic area, the "Smart Yingxian Wooden Pagoda" uses virtual reality devices to simulate tourists climbing the tower, ensuring the best possible travel experience. Unlike most digital solutions for ancient buildings, the "Smart Yingxian Wooden Pagoda" not only restores the internal and external structure of ancient buildings, but also integrates the thousand year history of the wooden pagoda into it. Experients can "tour" the wooden pagoda under the guidance of characters such as Liang Sicheng and the old monk, and learn about the past and present of the pagoda by clicking on operations such as flipping through photo albums and diaries. Based on the most professional knowledge of architecture and history, the "Smart Yingxian Wooden Pagoda" revives the important historical moments experienced by the wooden pagoda through technological means. In terms of innovative protection, "Smart Yingxian Wooden Pagoda" has established a visual digital information archive for the wooden pagoda, providing data framework support for future protection work. At the same time, the project has added multiple interactive innovation attempts in combination with AI technology, such as using AI and augmented reality technology to assist in on-site surveys. Next, the R&D team will also attempt to use large models for professional training, create "Smart Tower Guardians" AI teaching assistants, and carry out more innovative explorations in the cultivation of ancient architecture talents and the inheritance of wooden tower research. "Joining hands with Lenovo Group to create this project is not only to use new technologies to record and understand this ancient building, but also to explore the possibility of protecting wooden towers in the future," said Liu Chang, director of the Institute of Architectural History and Cultural Relics Protection at the School of Architecture, Tsinghua University
