When AI is "resurrected" into an industry - how to ensure that digital life technology always goes for good

2024-05-09

Sun Kai, co-founder of Nanjing Siji Intelligent Technology Co., Ltd., did not expect that his idea of "reviving" his mother in the cloud years ago has now grown into a thriving emerging industry. Recently, news of using generative artificial intelligence technology to "resurrect" deceased loved ones and celebrities has been circulating in newspapers. Many people are also eager to try and create a "digital avatar" for themselves. The imagination of digital life and digital immortality in science fiction movies seems to be right in front of us. As "cloud dwelling" becomes a reality, digital life has become a hot topic of discussion for a while. Some people are full of expectations for this, believing that it not only soothes the soul, but also has the potential to become a future labor force, exerting positive value. Some people express concern that behind meeting human needs, digital humans actually conceal many issues such as bioethics, cultural values, and legal norms. How is AI "resurrection" achieved? What are the ethical and legal risks associated with this technology? How to make digital life develop for the better? A reporter from Science and Technology Daily conducted an interview on this matter. The big model allowed digital humans to fly into ordinary people's homes. The simple sentence "Have you eaten yet?" made Sun Kai's eyes red. At that moment, he felt that his mother had returned to his side. In 2018, the sudden death of his mother dealt a heavy blow to Sun Kai. The next year, he approached the company's chairman, Sima Huapeng, and decided to use artificial intelligence technology to replicate the digital "mother". The "resurrection" of AI is essentially the cloning of digital character images through the learning of existing images, sounds, language, and other content of characters. At that time, two difficult problems were presented to the team. One is the lack of character image data, and Sun Kai can only provide one ID photo of his mother; Secondly, there is a lack of available sound data, and Sun Kai can only choose the voice closest to his mother from a few samples. However, a year later, when Sun Kai saw his mother, he still couldn't control his emotions. The "mother" on the screen speaks and laughs quietly, listening to her son's narration. "Now, I chat with my mother every week. Here, I can be the most authentic version of myself." Sun Kai admitted that although the "mother" answer mode in front of the screen is relatively fixed, for him, daily communication and the emotional companionship of his "mother" have already provided him with great comfort. Some people are concerned that Sun Kai may become emotionally dependent on this and advise him to step out as soon as possible. But Sun Kai believes that "for many people who have lost their loved ones, the benefits of digital companionship outweigh the drawbacks." Like Sima Huapeng and Sun Kai, there are many people who have tried AI "resurrection" technology early on. Musician Bao Xiaobai also ventured into AI for the cloning of digital "daughters". It is not difficult to see from their experiences that in the early stages of technological development, familiarity with the AI industry seems to have become a prerequisite for cloning digital images. For ordinary people, this is an unattainable threshold, let alone investing a lot of time and money. The change occurred in 2023. The emergence of generative artificial intelligence technology represented by ChatGPT has provided a fertile ground for the development of cloning digital humans. "The breakthrough in the big model has greatly reduced the cost of cloning digital humans. Previously, it cost over 100000 yuan, but now it only costs a few thousand to ten thousand yuan." As an experienced person, Sima Hua
