New energy storage technologies are moving from laboratories to industrialization
2024-05-01
On April 26, 2024, the Zhongguancun Forum - "Carbon Peak and Carbon Neutrality Technology Forum" (hereinafter referred to as the forum) was held, and new energy storage technologies have become a major highlight of this forum's attention. The reporter learned from the forum that the Chinese Academy of Sciences is continuing to promote the industrialization of compressed air energy storage technology. At the same time, China's 100 megawatt liquid flow battery energy storage peak shaving power station is operating well. In 2024, the development of new energy storage was first included in the government work report. As an important equipment foundation for promoting green and low-carbon energy transformation, new energy storage is like a huge "power bank" that can store surplus electricity from new energy sources such as solar and wind energy, charging during low electricity consumption periods and discharging during peak electricity consumption periods. "Energy storage is the key supporting technology for the energy revolution." Chen Haisheng, director and researcher of the Institute of Engineering Thermophysics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said that energy storage is a process of storing energy in some form or equipment and releasing it when needed. It can turn intermittent, unstable and uncontrollable renewable energy into continuous, stable and controllable energy, thus promoting renewable energy to replace fossil energy, thereby reducing carbon emissions, ensuring national energy security and satisfying people's aspirations for a better life. Chen Haisheng introduced that new energy storage refers to new energy storage methods besides pumped storage, including physical energy storage methods such as compressed air storage and chemical energy storage methods such as batteries and hydrogen. In terms of new physical energy storage, the Chinese Academy of Sciences is continuously promoting the industrialization of compressed air energy storage technology. In August last year, the first international 300 MW advanced compressed air energy storage system expander jointly developed by the Institute of Engineering Thermophysics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and China National Energy Corporation was successfully rolled off the production line. The world's first 300 megawatt compressed air energy storage power station based on this technology was successfully debugged in April this year. "The advantages of compressed air energy storage include a relatively large scale, with a single machine capacity of 100 to 300 megawatts; a relatively long lifespan, which can be used for 40 to 50 years; a relatively low cost, with an installation cost of 800 to 1000 yuan per kilowatt hour; and an unlimited energy storage cycle. Currently, this technology is in the process of demonstration to industrialization." Chen Haisheng said. In terms of new chemical energy storage, Li Xianfeng, deputy director and researcher of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, introduced that in 2022, China's 100 megawatt liquid flow battery energy storage and peak shaving power station will be officially connected to the grid in Dalian, Liaoning Province, becoming the world's largest liquid flow battery energy storage and peak shaving power station with the largest power and capacity so far. Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, provides technical support for all vanadium flow battery energy storage. Li Xianfeng introduced that currently, the power station is operating well and began accepting dispatch from the Liaoning Provincial Power Grid in mid 2023. By the end of 2023, it has been dispatched and operated for more than 240 cycles, with a cumulative charging and discharging capacity of about 100 million kilowatt hours. Ding Chibiao, Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said that the Chinese Academy of Sciences has always taken seizing the commanding heights of science and technology as its core task, deployed a number of major scientific and technological tasks in the clean and efficient use of traditional energy, research and development of new energy technologies and energy storage technologies, and achieved a series of major application and innovation achievements. In the future, China
