Liang Sicheng sat on a stone bench, with a cane in his hand, and looked up slightly, gazing at the cliff statue in front of him. This is a photo taken 84 years ago. In January 1940, 38 year old Liang Sicheng and colleagues from the China Architecture Society came to Southwest China to investigate ancient architecture. They discovered these stone carvings left in the wilderness of the northern mountains of Dazu. Liang Sicheng's figure in front of the stone carving was photographed by peers, becoming one of the earliest image records of Dazu Rock Carvings. Seven years later, Liang Sicheng presented the results of this survey at an international academic seminar. This is the first report on Dazu Rock Carvings in the international academic community. Since then, with the deepening of archaeological research, hundreds of more than 50000 cliff statues have been found in Dazu Rock Carvings, and the historical outline of Dazu stone carvings has gradually become clear: it was built in the early Tang Dynasty and reached its peak in the Song Dynasty, integrating the three religions of Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism. Five grottoes, namely North Mountain, Baoding Mountain, South Mountain, Shimen Mountain and Shizhuan Mountain, are the most distinctive, representing the highest level of grotto art in the world from the 9th century to the 13th century. On March 27, tourists visited the Dazu Rock Carvings Scenic Area. In 1952, the Dazu Rock Carvings Cultural Relics Protection Agency was established to systematically and scientifically protect Dazu Rock Carvings. At that time, the construction of the Beishan Stone Carvings Protection Corridor was launched, and a rain proof roof was added above the Beishan Stone Carvings; In 1961, the cliff statues of Beishan and Baodingshan became the first batch of national key cultural relics protection units; In 1999, Dazu Rock Carvings were listed in the The World Heritage List; In 2015, the National Stone Cultural Relics Protection No. 1 Project - Dazu Rock Carvings Thousand Hand Avalokitesvara Rescue Protection Project was completed; In 2019, the publication of the Complete Works of Dazu Rock Carvings filled the gap in the preparation and publication of large-scale archaeological reports in domestic grotto temples... Events recorded in the history of Dazu Rock Carvings witnessed generations of cultural relics protection and research workers "choose one thing and end their lives". Their figure guarding the "national treasure" cultural relics has never been far away for decades. Guo Xiangying, who is nearly 90 years old, also left a figure in front of the statue that Liang Sicheng was watching. In 1974, Guo Xiangying, who worked at the Dazu County Cultural Management Office, came to Beishan to guard the stone carvings. There are few tourists visiting the mountain, and no one is seen for ten and a half days. Guo Xiangying, who loves painting, painted Buddha statues in niches and caves, creating archives for cultural relics. It took ten years for Guo Xiangying to complete a hand painted scroll of more than 20 meters long, painting all the important cave statues in Beishan Mountain and Baoding Mountain, becoming a precious historical archive and visual display of Dazu Rock Carvings, helping Dazu Rock Carvings to successfully apply for World Heritage. The location map of the Beishan Cliff Statue painted by Guo Xiangying. Nowadays, with the advancement of technology and the use of digital technologies such as 3D surveying and mapping, the information of the grotto itself, the dependent environment of the grotto, and the terrain and landforms can be accurately collected in all directions. More than 10000 large statues have digital archives and have gained new life in the virtual world. The ball screen film premiered in July 2022 is another attempt to activate the use of Dazu Rock Carvings. "In addition to the multi angle and panoramic experience, the film also enables some grotto statues hidden in the mountains that are difficult for tourists to see, and some stone carving art eroded by years to live in the image." Jiang Siwei, president of Dazu Rock Carvings Research Institute, said that
