Shamian Ancient Tree - Witness of Time (44)
2024-04-26
In 1859, Shamian became the British and French Concession, and the Provincial Foreign Affairs Office was originally the British Consulate General of Shamian in Guangzhou. In the past, the British Consulate General in Shamian, Guangzhou was renovated with a courtyard layout. The main building was located to the north, with auxiliary buildings on the east and west sides. In the middle of the courtyard was a large lawn, and there was one fine leaved banyan tree on the east and west sides. The trunk was thick and the crown was like a giant umbrella. The tree shape was beautiful, symmetrical on both sides, and was revered as a "feng shui tree". Legend has it that in 1948, the slender banyan tree in the west caught fire for no reason and burned half of its branches. The above building complex was destroyed during the anti Hong Kong British demolition of Kowloon City in 1948. According to the British, "thugs" looted and burned most of the buildings, leaving the consulate in ruins.
