On the evening of April 23rd, World Book Day, the Palace Exhibition Area of the South Vietnamese King Museum held the first edition of Ma Boyong's new historical novel "The Eaters of the South" for 2024. This activity was jointly organized by Guangdong Xinhua, Nanyue King Museum and the Museum, and jointly launched with Tiktok's "Great Learning" and Tiktok's "Tiktok's All People Good Book Program". Just like "The Litchi of Chang'an" and "The Fifteen Days of Two Capitals", the new book "The Eater of the South" is also a story that Ma Boyong "dug out" from the historical gap. The book is written against the backdrop of South Vietnam two thousand years ago, and tells the story of a foodie envoy who travels to the food rich South Vietnam and encounters a delicious dish called goji sauce, which ultimately changes the fate of South Vietnam. During the live broadcast, Ma Boyong mentioned one of the sources of inspiration for the creation of this book. During his reading of "Records of the Grand Historian," he came across a detail about the state of Nanyue, which was in conflict with the Han Dynasty due to the natural dangers of the Five Ridges, which greatly troubled the Han Dynasty. Tang Meng, an envoy of the Han Dynasty, went on an envoy to the South Yue Kingdom and discovered a unique sauce called Goujiang. He thought it was sour, sweet, and particularly delicious, so he asked the local residents where it came from. The South Yue people said that the true name of this sauce was actually Shu Goujiang, not locally produced. But the Han Dynasty did not export such goods to South Vietnam. The keen Tang Meng discovered some clues. He returned to Sichuan to inquire about the people selling goji sauce and found that in addition to being supplied internally to the Han Dynasty, Sichuan goji sauce was also exported to Yelang Kingdom. He traveled back and forth to the country of Yelang and found out through investigation that the Shu goji sauce from the country of Nanyue was imported from Yelang. Yelang has a national river called Zangke River, along which is the the Pearl River, and you can directly reach Nanyue. After Tang Meng returned, he immediately reported to Emperor Wu of Han that besides the Five Ridges, there was another road that could lead to the Southern Yue Kingdom, which changed the territory of the entire Greater China. At the same time, the first live broadcast chose the Nanyue King Museum, which was also inspired by Ma Boyong's unforgettable visiting experience. "A few years ago, I visited the Nanyue King Museum in Guangzhou and saw a bamboo slip inside, which was a garden archive of a pot jujube tree. This detail is very small, but it is very intriguing. There are no wild pot jujube trees in Guangdong, where did this jujube tree come from? Upon further investigation, the Nanyue King Zhao Tuo is from Zhending, Hebei, and the jujube tree happens to be a specialty of Zhending." This story also became the most important clue to break the deadlock in this book. The event also invited renowned historical writer Liu Bo to discuss some of the significant influences that food in history and literature has had. As Ma Boyong said in his postscript, "The most interesting part of this story is not actually the experience of Tang Meng, a food detective, but the geographical cognition it presents... In the eyes of the Western Han people of that era, the vast areas outside of the Central Plains were shrouded in thick fog. To light up these maps, one needs courage, strategy, and geographical intuition that transcends the times. It was people like Tang Meng and Zhang Qian who constantly explored that turned 'confusion and ignorance' into 'obvious', opening up a wave of Han culture expanding southward and even forming today's territory. The influence of geographical cognition changes can be seen in Ma Boyong's activities." To reveal oneself, just like the protagonist Tang Meng in the book, is also a complete foodie. Likes going all over the country
