In recent years, the amount of dowries in some places has been increasing, which has increased the burden of marriage and love for young people. A survey conducted by the Social Survey Center of China Youth Daily in collaboration with Wenjuan.com, among 1001 respondents, showed that 56.0% of them believe that dowry is important in the marriage process and is indispensable for marital etiquette. Regarding the governance of high priced dowries, 60.5% of respondents hope to establish a new trend of civilized marriage in society, while 59.3% of respondents suggest promoting solid adult education to help young people establish healthy views on marriage and life. Sociologists analyze that the trend of comparing dowries is prevalent, and the proper ceremonial significance is ignored. Ma Chen, a graduate student born after 2000 at a certain university in Beijing, believes that dowries are important in the marriage process and have been a traditional etiquette since ancient times. The amount of dowry should be determined by the new couple through consultation between the parents of both parties, and the method of allocation should also be determined by the new couple. Wang Gang, a married employee born in 1995 at a company in Nanjing, believes that the most important thing in marriage is whether the two people are compatible and whether their parents approve. In contrast, the amount of dowry given is not very important. In the survey, 56.0% of respondents believe that dowry is important in the marriage process and is an indispensable form of marital etiquette; 27.8% of respondents believe it is not important, as dowries raise the threshold for marriage; 16.2% of respondents expressed difficulty in speaking. Associate Professor Cai Lei from the School of Sociology at Wuhan University introduced that dowry, also known as dowry or dowry in ancient times, refers to the property paid by the male family to the female family during the process of entering into a marital relationship. The traditional betrothal gifts in society are essentially a form of marital etiquette, symbolizing the establishment of a marital relationship, declaring the legality and effectiveness of marriage, reflecting the man's emphasis and commitment to marriage, and also containing expectations for a better marriage. Nowadays, some people attach too much importance to the economic function of betrothal gifts, resulting in an increasing amount of betrothal gifts and a growing trend of comparison. Many young people and even their parents no longer understand the etiquette and auspicious meanings that betrothal gifts should have. During the pre Qin period, Sichuan pepper and peaches were both used as dowries, symbolizing the abundance of children, blessings, and abundant fruits. Later, wild geese became the dowry for ancient marriages due to their loyalty to their partners. "With the rapid development of the social economy, the number of dowries has gradually increased. From a few hundred yuan in the 1990s to tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands of yuan now, some places even have super high priced dowries, which lose the original meaning of dowries and become a form of comparison, even unilateral demand." Ma Chen believes that each family's economic strength is different, blindly comparing, and in the end, the dowry makes the two people unhappy, even breaking up, which is not worth it. In the survey, respondents believed that "high priced dowries" were mainly related to comparison psychology (52.5%), local customs (51.3%), traditional beliefs (51.2%), as well as materialism (50.4%), urban-rural disparities, uneven resource allocation (48.4%), and imbalanced gender ratios in the local population (25.8%).
